Trends Since October of 2009, LC USASH and USPRLL divisions have lost approx. 20% of their staff Many long-term subject specialists have retired Fewer ECIPs being processed by LC; however, LC wants to increase its acquisition of materials through CIP Slow increase in the proportion of ECIPs processed by partner libraries vs. LC Partner libraries have similar pressures as LC in terms of loss of staff and long-term experts retiring

15. Current ECIP Backlogs at LC As of June 2 nd, 2013: 3,296 ECIPS are in the Library of Congress backlog. Some areas have very large backlogs: Literature Political Science Religion Science Technology

Results of Backlogs Publishers expressing concern about delays In some subject areas, books are published before CIP data is created due to delays Publishers abandoning CIP for PCN program Pre-publication metadata for libraries, vendors, and bibliographic utilities is less available CIP Program put at risk at the very time when it is needed most by overall library community New initiatives such as the CIP e-book program are compromised

Benefits of ECIP Distribution Greater distribution of ECIP workload benefits everyone: Partake of diversity of subject expertise throughout the nation Partners see latest research to build their own collections Libraries outside of LC more likely to submit subject proposals to enhance LCSH Partners can communicate directly with publishers and authors in areas of interest

18. Call to Action! The Library of Congress would like to increase the participation of the ECIP Cataloging Partners to 50% of the total number of ECIPs cataloged by 2020.

19. How can we reach this goal? What the Library of Congress will do: Program for Cooperative Cataloging currently reaching out to NACO/BIBCO members that are likely candidates to join Continued promotion of the ECIP program by the LC CIP staff members through articles, newsletters and presentations at conferences Outreach to individuals whenever possible

20. What can you do as partners? Be an Ambassador for CIP! Increase your coverage if you are able to Promote the benefits of the program whenever you can Give presentations at your local, state, and regional conferences and ask your partners to join Write articles about the program, why you participate, what you like about it, and why you think others could benefit by joining Get the word out as to how CIP metadata is critical to our future linked data environment
