3 Shape, Form and Type The Rock Chestnut Oak is a medium sized tree Can reach 50 to 70 feet in height Crown is dense and broad in a 50 foot spread Species of Oak Part of the Beech Family Figure 1: Rock Chestnut Oak form

5 Twig and Leaf TwigLeaf Twigs of Rock Chestnut Oak are stout Hairless Orange-brown Branches build up thick bark in a short amount of time End in long, pointed buds The leaves are simple Alternate From 4 to 6 inches in length Oval in shape Shiny green on top Paler on underside Rounded teeth

7 Bud, Flower and Fruit Bud ◦Light brown color ◦Sharp pointed ◦Cone shaped Flower Flowers of Male Rock Chestnut Oaks are green-yellow catkins, 2-4 inches in length Females are red in color and come in spikes  Fruit ◦ Oval acorn 1 to 1 ½ inches in length ◦ Tea-cup, scaly cap ◦ Shiny

9 Habitat and Range Rock Chestnut Oak is commonly found on dry, rocky soils Mainly in the Appalachian area Humid climate Best growth on well drained soil near streams Native range extends from Maine through New York to southern Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Georgia and Alabama
