1
Boring & Drilling Four general types of hand drills: –Hand drill (egg beater) –Brace –Pistol grip crank –Push (Yankee) Crank Brace Pistol Grip Crank Push (Yankee)
2
Brace is designed to be used with auger bits which have a tapered square tang (at end of the shank) It is used for boring out holes and countersinking and counter-boring. Hand Drill (egg beater) is used to drill small holes & countersink. Drill bits must have round shanks. Size is determined by largest diameter drill that can fit into its chuck. ¼ inch is a common size.
3
Pistol Grip Hand Drill: Same as hand drill but gives better control in drilling because of pistol grip design. Push Drill (yankee) For small diameter holes in restricted locations where a crank style would be difficult to use. Use special bits which are stored in the handle.
4
Power Hand Drills Size is determined by capacity of chuck. ¼, ½, & 3/8 are common sizes Some are cordless and are rated by voltage of battery pack. Other features include hammer feature for concrete or masonry work & special designs for working in tight places.
5
Drill Press Used for drilling, countersinking, counter-boring, sanding, routing, shaping & mortising. Size is determined by distance from center of drill bit to the column. Speeds can be controlled by pulleys & belts, gears or variable speed.
6
Types of Drilling Operations Drilling Countersinking Counter-boring Center Drilling Threading (tapping) Tapers
7
Types of Drill Bits Auger bit used in Brace For wood only. Brad Point – point allows You to start hole without Straying from center. Spade drill bit – used Mainly in power drills & drill presses Forstner bit – make a very Clean cut with a flat Bottom hole. Good for Counter-boring holes
