2. BASIC DRILL TRAINING LESSON 4 – COMPLIMENTS; REASON, ORIGIN AND INFORMATION

6. INTRODUCTION The aim of this lesson is for you to understand why and when compliments are paid This will help you to pass your basic drill and turnout The reason why you need to know this is so you know who to pay compliments to and when

7. REASON AND ORIGIN

8. The salute with the hand, the present arms and the salute with the sword were methods by which the person paying a compliment could show the person to whom the compliment was paid that no offence was meant. They are all gestures symbolic of loyalty and trust. A salute is, in fact, the normal greeting between comrades in arms.

9. REASON AND ORIGIN That a salute is given when a cadet meets an officer is a basic matter of discipline. That the salute is properly and smartly given is a matter of training.

10. REASON AND ORIGIN Failure by an officer in uniform to insist on being saluted is a breach of discipline. Failure by an officer to return a salute shows a lack of courtesy on his part.

11. REASON AND ORIGIN All compliments derive their origin from the Sovereign, to whom the highest compliment, the Royal Salute, is paid. Because of their link with the Sovereign the following are also paid some form of compliment:

12. A) MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY

13. B) GOVERNORS AND MINISTERS TO WHOM THE SOVEREIGN DELEGATES AUTHORITY

14. C) FORMED BODIES OF TROOPS ON THE SOVEREIGN’S BUSINESS

15. D) ALL STANDARDS, GUIDONS AND COLOURS OF REGIMENTS OF THE ARMY AND THEIR EQUIVALENT IN THE ROYAL NAVY, ROYAL MARINES AND ROYAL AIR FORCE

16. E) ALL OFFICERS, AS HOLDERS OF THE SOVEREIGN’S COMMISSION

17. When do we salute?

18. A) THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

19. B) MILITARY FUNERALS

20. C) STANDARDS, GUIDONS AND COLOURS

21. POINTS TO NOTE If you are in full uniform, and pass an officer who is in civilian clothing, YOU will still salute: the officer just will not salute back. Instead, he will brace up and acknowledge that you have saluted.

22. THE ACF BANNER The first ACF Banner was presented by the Colonel in Chief HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1960. A new Banner was presented by the Duke in 1982

23. THE ACF BANNER The ACF Banner is not classed as a Colour, Standard or Guidon as it is dedicated not consecrated. It will not be ‘trooped’ in a ceremonial sense. Within the ACF, it will be treated with ‘due ceremony’: it will be given the respect given to a Colour, except that:

24. A) WHEN MARCHED ONTO PARADE, ARMS WILL BE SHOULDERED, NOT PRESENTED

25. B) IT WILL NOT BE SALUTED BY INDIVIDUALS OR PARTIES OF CADETS PASSING IT

26. C) WHEN THE BANNER PASSES INDIVIDUALS OR FORMED PARTIED OF CADETS, THEY WILL STAND TO ATTENTION.

27. D) WHEN THE BANNER IS ACTUALLY HANDED TO AN INDIVIDUAL, HE WILL SALUTE BEFORE ACCEPTING IT.
