Bellwork Be in your seat at the bell…or tardy. Grab the handout for today. Begin to look over it. Today is exam review. From today on: food is banned in class. A cell phone = a referral (too many warnings already)

Exam Overview Worth: 20% of semester grade # of questions: 62 Sections: (I) Romanticism & Transcendentalism, (II) STEAL Characterization, (III) Rhetorical Précis, (IV) Thematic statements, (V) Theme paragraph writing, (VI) “When writing essays,” (VII) Literary style, (VIII) & (IX) read a passage each section & answer questions on it (kind of like ACT reading)

Section I: Rom. & Trans. Know the beliefs of each one Know where they overlap in beliefs Total # of questions: 5

Section II: STEAL You will receive a passage about a character from a story we read this semester. The passage will be broken up into line numbers (like in our PPT review game). You will need to be able to state which lines display which elements. # of questions: 5 (for each STEAL element). Sample question: Which line(s) display(s) characterization through thoughts?

Section III: Rhetorical Précis Know the description of each of the four sentences and what order they go in as well as what should be included in each. Be able to look at a sample précis and identify the sentences and what order they should be in. # of questions: 7

Section IV: Thematic Statements Know the definitions of each common, universal theme topic (notes sheet is online). Know the do’s & don’t’s of writing a theme statement. Be able to identify a sample cliché from a sample vague and sample command. # of questions: 10

Section V: Theme Paragraphs Know what all goes into writing a theme paragraph. Know the three theme paragraph rules. # of questions: 3

Section VI: When Writing Essays Know the correct perspective for academic essays. Know how to introduce and cite quotes. Be able to identify a simple from compound from complex sentence. Be able to distinguish the following grammar errors (have nothing in common): fragment, vague pronoun reference, run-on. # of questions: 6

Section VII: Literary Style Be able to distinguish use of dialogue from alliteration from allusion when given samples. Memorize the elements of literary style definitions (remember, copies of this and all notes can be reviewed online). # of questions: 14

Sections VIII-IX 8: You will read a short passage & answer 7 T/F plot-based questions (reading comprehension) 9: You will read a second passage & answer 5 more reading comprehension questions.

Class: Mon. & Tue. …are study days… …allowed to go to library to study for this class …allowed to do so for working on any 0’s or needed revisions for this class …allowed to do so or to stay to work on anything else for any class you may need to work on … not allowed to chill on cell phones or party or be loud and disrupt for the sake of doing so
