Chapter 10 Analysis Notes
2
Called a “hive of industry” Bee hive of economy. Everyone has a job, everyone has a place in the world. Again, the comparison that these people are insects is further at play
3
Wants to make Bernard a “public example” The DHC chooses this room with the most upper caste people to watch Bernard be humiliated for his actions It’s the “monkey see-monkey do” attitude Meaning the others would think: I don’t want to be like Bernard, I want to stay in this world. Remember, they are like children!
4
Henry Foster defends Bernard – Bernard IS good at his job. The DHC counters this as why it is MORE important to do this now. MEANING: even if you are good at your job, you are never safe. Follow their rules, or get out of the way.
5
DHC calls for attention of the entire room – causes the “hive” to stop for a moment DHC accuses Bernard of: Being a “soon-to-be-ex colleague” of theirs Betrayer of trust Heretic due to his dislike of sports and soma Unorthodox due to his sex life and possible infatuation with people in the world Refusal to follow the teachings of Henry Ford ALL OF THIS IS GROUNDS TO EXPEL HIM FROM THE WORLD STATE.
6
DHC offers a clear punishment: Iceland to be under the command of Epsilons. The DHC says he cannot “defect” or “offend” anyone – if Bernard is not there, he cannot hurt anyone anymore. DHC makes a “fatal mistake” – he offers Bernard the right to defend himself.
7
Bernard does have a plan: Bernard brings Linda into the room The room is stunned into silence: she is fat, old, and disgusting. Linda immediately goes to “Tomakin” – or Thomas, the DHC Reveals she was trapped, and had a child… his child John enters Calls the DHC his father Falls on his knees to pay respect to his father The DHC calls this a “monstrosity” – it is, this is the reputational damage that will send the DHC away… not Bernard
8
The DHC runs out (he has a child), allowing Bernard to win (no matter how “weird” Bernard is, he is not a monster how has a child somewhere hidden in the world).
9
Bernard will not be leaving the novel as anticipated. What this event DOES prove though is the following: Bernard DOES LOVE the World State. So much so that he will destroy a man’s life to stay No one, not even the DHC, is safe in this world from a “bad” reputation No matter how “defected” one is (Bernard) – they can fit in if they have the competitive drive to STAY in the world Linda will not be saved – she was only brought home to run tests on Further, John was only brought “home” to be a pawn and a lab rat. No one will love him here; no one will care for him. Nothing CHANGES for John. Bernard GAINS from John’s misery – while John silently suffers. It again shows who is and who is not real.
