Essential Questions  To what extent was Yugoslavia independent?  What actions made them successful as a country ?  How did the Cold War effect their development?

Thesis  Many of the communist countries began to collapse, because the communist ideal influenced and had an impact on social, political, and economic aspects of the countries who promoted it and practiced it. In Yugoslavia, with communism causing each republic to break away from it weakens them as a nation, however with Serbia interrest they seemed to have made communism work.

Yugoslavia Independence  Yugoslavia was a union of republics that were under communist dictatorship for more then 40 years.  While the Soviet Union gained a new satellite nation in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), it lost its influence in Yugoslavia.  The local communists in Yugoslavia had come to power without Soviet assistance, and their leader, Josip Broz Tito, refused to subordinate the country to Stalin's control.

Cont.  Tito's defiance led the Communist Information Bureau (Cominform--founded in 1947 to assume some of the functions of the Comintern, which had been abolished in 1943) to expel the Yugoslav party from the international communist movement in 1948.  To avert the rise of other independent leaders, Stalin purged many of the chief communists in other East European states.  Declared themselves itself a republic ( Feb. 1, 1946)

Successful Actions  followed the Soviet Stalinist model of economic development as early as 1946.  “some aspects …achieved considerable success...the public works of that period organized by the government managed to rebuild and even improve the Yugoslav infrastructure (in particular the road system), with little cost to the state.” (“Communist Yugoslavia”)  Refused to take part in the Warsaw Pact  1950’s rapid liberalization and decentralization of the country's political system, the institution of new unique economic system, and a diplomatic policy of non-alignment.

Impact of Cold War  The cold war didn’t seem to help Yugoslavia develope. The cold war ended up causing Yugoslavia to fall to pieces due to the fact it caused communism control to collapse. One by one the new governments declared independence from Yugoslavia.  The Serbian government opposed this. Serbia was the most powerful republic under Yugoslavia and the communist leaders wanted it to stay this way. This led to a violent civil war between Serbs and Croatia.

Josip Broz Tito

Foreign and Domestic Stratgies ForiegnDomestic  Joined the Cominform  “diplomatic manuevering” in Julian March and Carinthia (“Communist Yugoslavia”)  Exercised neutriality  Maintain good relations with many countries  On 1 January 1967, Yugoslavia was the first communist country to open its borders to all foreign visitors and abolish visa requirements.  Domestically, Tito allowed gradual liberalization of the economy. He remained the leader of Yugoslavia until his death in 1980.
