The New FAD in Healthcare The Georgia Association of Nursing Students (GANS) is taking a proactive approach to break through the barriers in nursing by collaborating with large organizations like the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). GANS is continually staying hands-on with HOSA, and this year for the first time ever, GANS partnered with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America to create the First Aid Discovery (FAD). FAD is a national platform for community service that bridges scouting merit badge needs with healthcare organization goals. Additionally, working with nationally recognized large organizations enables healthcare organizations to reach large demographics in efforts to decrease healthcare disparities. Furthermore, FAD allows GANS to support the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) resolutions to Increase Men in Nursing, Increase Diversity in Nursing, Increase Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training, Increase Awareness of Public Health Nursing, and Support The Future of Nursing Campaign.

What is FAD? FAD is a national platform that bridges scouting needs with healthcare organization goals. FAD provides a step-by-step guide for healthcare organizations, in collaboration with other community groups like the Scouts, to offer First Aid training. These healthcare organizations include but are not limited to, the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the National Safety Council, MayoClinic, National Student Nurses Association, Georgia Association of Nursing Students, Phi Delta Epsilon (pre-medical students), hospitals, community clinics, nursing programs at universities, nursing faculty, and student nurses. With the help of these organizations, the Scouts have registered counselors to teach First Aid according to their national standards for rank advancement and merit badge requirements. Thus, healthcare organizations can train and save many lives by teaching first aid to scouts nationally.

FAD Benefits This project facilitates breaking through the barrier of communication between large organizations needing first aid instruction. FAD illustrates the steps to set up an event with scouts and to teach first aid. Not only has FAD increased involvement from nursing students, provides education to scouts, and reaches a large population, but it also advocates for the scouts by raising funds that will go directly to the Scout troop’s projects. Through a small registration fee, about $1,000 will be awarded to the local scout troop’s project. GANS members will have the opportunity to be Scout Counselor Certified and Youth Protection Certified. Nursing faculty awarded 2 clinical hours for the Community Health Nursing class alternative clinical experience by creating teaching plans out of the First Aid curriculum outlined in FAD.
