2 EQ: What are the main events surrounding European imperialism in India during the 19th century?
Main Idea: By the mid-1800s, the BEIC controlled 3/5 of India #1: The British were able to conquer India so easily because of its diversity…they were NOT able to unify and fight the British #2: The main imperial goal of the BEIC in India was profit, though they did improve India’s infrastructure (built roads, railroads, ports and implement social changes) Main Idea: There were several causes and results of the Sepoy Rebllion #3: British violation of Hindu religious beliefs, such as forcing Indians overseas to serve as troops and making them eat animal fats on gun cartridges upset the Sepoys #4: The result of this rebellion was increased mistrust of Indians for British people AND the BEIC lost its direct control over India

Main Idea: British policies were designed to fit India into the overall British economy #5: The British government continued to desire raw materials from India BUT also saw India as a place to sell British good…they forbade Indians from manufacturing their own goods and only allowed them to buy British goods (negative) #6: New medicines and agricultural techniques were introduced, causing rapid population growth in India and causing famines in some regions (negative) #7: British rule did, on the positive side, bring more unity to India and put Muslims and Hindus at peace (positive)

Main Idea: Indians and Britain developed different views of each other’s culture #8: Many Indians felt that India could learn/take advantage of Western ideas and technology while still maintaining an Indian cultural identity #9: The British, on the other hand, had respect for Indian culture and heritage, but were dismissive of their achievements Main Idea: Exposure to European ideas caused Indian nationalist (independence) movements to emerge #10: Educated Indians (by the British) established the Indian National Congress in 1885 with the goal of ending British Imperial rule #11: Indian Muslims broke from the Hindus and formed their own “Muslim League” with the goal of creating a state for themselves
