Story Paragraph Word Sentence
Sentence Paragraph Story Today, we’re going to learn how to write paragraphs. Remember, we’ve already learned words and sentences, and paragraphs are the next step for us to be able to write a story. Paragraphs are short stories about something. Here’s an example of a paragraph about an Oreo cookie.

The parts of a paragraph are…
Topic Sentence Supporting Details Closing Sentence There are special parts of a paragraph that we need for people to understand it. (What do you already know about writing stories/paragraphs?) Do you have any ideas about what some of those parts might be? We need to know what it’s about, right? That’s called the topic sentence – it’s the first sentence and tells us what the topic or subject of the sentence is. We learned about those yesterday. What else do we need in a story? We need some details – some information about the subject. All of the information in the paragraph that tells you about the subject is called Supporting Details. What do you do when you want to end the story or paragraph? We need something that tells us that it’s the end before we write The End. This is called the Closing Sentence. It reminds us what the paragraph was about.

Paragraphs are like Oreos
Now, I’ve got something that will help us remember the parts of a paragraph. What are the parts of an Oreo cookie? OK, there’s a cookie at the top, crème in the middle, and a cookie on the bottom. What’s your favorite part of an Oreo cookie? What would happen to the cookie if it didn’t have any crème in it? Would it be the same if it didn’t have the cookies? Do you like Oreo cookies? Why? How do you eat an Oreo? What do Oreo cookies sound like? Let’s write a topic sentence about Oreo cookies.

Crème Filling Supporting Details Bottom cookie Closing sentence
Oreo cookies are just like paragraphs. The top cookie is like our topic sentence. The crème is like the supporting details. The bottom cookie is like the closing sentence. Each part is needed to make the paragraph work, just like each part of an Oreo cookie is needed to make it yummy! Top cookie Topic Sentence

Topic Sentence I like Oreo cookies.
10
Supporting Details I like to eat They go them one bite crunch, crunch,
at a time They go crunch, crunch, crunch when I eat them. I like Oreo cookies I put my topic sentence in the middle, then I made bubbles around it with the things I like about Oreos, how I like to eat them, and what it sounds like when I eat them. I like how they always look like they’re smiling.

Closing Sentence Oreo cookies are great!
