2 The Colony Honeybees live in a large group called a COLONY. Each colony occupies its own hive. All the bees work together to survive and make honey 30,000 bees in a hive, majority are female workers! Constantly replenished

3 Body Parts of Bees 3 part body plan: HEAD THORAX ABDOMEN Since each kind of bee has a different job to de, parts of their bodies have evolved in special ways

4 WORKER Smallest type but most popular in the hive (90%) Female Performs chores in the hive: Feed baby bees Build the wax comb, where all the bees live Guards the hive Controls the hive temperature Collects nectar and pollen* Live for about 3 - 6 weeks (worked to death!)

7 DRONE Fatter than the queen Strong flier Only job is to fertilize the queen Dies in the act FUN FACT: The rest of the drones return to the hive to be fed and cared for by the worker bees until food gets scarce in the fall. Then the workers bite off the Drone’s wings and throw them out into the cold!
