That’s peepy cool!! My Peep Project! Katie Kenny

The Signifer Signifer: A signifer was a standard bearer of the Roman Legions. He carried a signum (standard) that was the military emblem of his unit. The signifer had a dangerous position in battle- he had to stand in the first rank. For my peep, I used felt to depict his animal headdress, with a decorative toothpick to resemble the signum and a silver-colored toothpick to represent his small sword. He is also wearing crepe paper as his uniform.

Aquilifer Aquilifer: Derived from aquila (eagle), the aquilifer was a senior signifer who’s job was to display the eagle standard of a Roman legion- a VERY important job, since losing the eagle standard was a huge disgrace. The eagle was considered the most important possession to the legion. He had no armor, but carried a parma- a circular shield. My peep has a lollipop with an eagle sticker to resemble the Roman legion’s signifer. He has a gumdrop as a helmet, with a toothpick sword, a drink umbrella as his shield, and crepe paper as his uniform.
4
Legatus Legatus: Generals of the Romany army, legates received large sums of the army’s booty at the end of a campaign. A legatus had to be a former tribune, who was usually appointed by the emperor. My legatus peep has a sword, a gumdrop- feather hat to resemble his helmet, and crepe paper on both his front and back to serve as his uniform.

Equites Equites: Equites were members of the equestrian order, and were referred to as horsemen or cavalry. The rank of an equite was usually passed from father to son. Equites rode a horse while carrying a staff and shield, and had head protection. My peep has a toothpick with a cone on top to represent his staff and a drink umbrella to represent his shield. He also has a feather in a gumdrop to represent his helmet, and is riding a horse. Pardon the horse’s appearence- he was cold, and was the only realistic looking plastic horse I could find!
6
Sagittarri Sagittarii: Sagitarri were the archers of the Roman army, located in the infantry or calvary unit. During the Principate (the first period of the Roman army) about 1/3 of sagittarii were on horseback, with the other 2/3 on foot. The sagittarii had wooden longbows with wooden arrows- the archers used bows as their primary weapon instead of the swords. My peep has a paperclip as a bow and a colored toothpick as an arrow, with a gumdrop head, toothpick sword, and crepe paper uniform.
