Common Core Content Standards This is a nationwide movement to coordinate what is being learned in all states. The movement provides a framework of expectations for each grade level, which builds to the next grade level, for each content area, this is known as “spiraling.” The goal is coordinated “excellence” and “stronger “foundational focus.” The goal is continuity across states for continuity in higher education Back

Depth of Knowledge This relates to the Complexity of the Activity that is being utilized for instruction. In other words, how much thinking goes into producing an answer. Generally, if there is one answer only, low level DOK 2+2 = 4 Generally, if there are multiple responses or multiple steps to completion of task, high level DOK There are five small boxes, and one larger box. Find out how many of the small boxes shown can fit into the larger box. What is the best configuration to use? Explain how you came to this conclusion. Back

Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium This is the organization that has been tasked to create the new version of testing for States involved with Common Core implementation. This test takes place of the CST that we have used historically. The test they will finalize between this year and next year is to be assistive. This year’s Field Test will help create their ultimate assessment. The New test, unlike those in the past, are Comp based. SBAC Field Test SBAC Field Test Back

CMS, a Technology School, uniquely prepared for tech demands of CCCS. Currently operating over 900 functioning computers on campus. Plans to add about 300 more. (1290 students) All students have experience with a technology interface. (Google+, edmodo, Blackboard) All students have experience in taking assessments using technology. Back

Back to Basics…A continuation of traditional Chaparral methods; collaborative work, group think, project based, tech coordination, interdisciplinary lessons. (Teachers as Facilitators) Focus on coordinated, blended lessons where subjects overlap and reinforce each other. (Teachers in Teams) Focus on extended thinking (DOK) Teachers not focused on what is being taught as much as what is being learned. Back

All CMS Cores are equally equipped to prepare students for the Common Core. Through Coordination, the Cores are becoming more and more the same. DBL continues project based learning, and has integrated Technology. The Traditional Chaparral Cores have begun integrating more design based, collaborative projects and plans. Back

Students will be asked to participate in more projects, more collaborative assignments, more tech based assignments. Students will be asked to come to their own, often unprompted solutions. Students will generally always be prompted to “prove” what they’ve been asked to solve. Grades will likely be a result of much more open-ended assignments. Back

The internet is ablaze with resources. Though Chaparral Middle School does not endorse any particular resource over another, here are some resources for you to consider… National PTA (Parent Teacher Association) http://pta.org/advocacy/content2.cfm?ItemNumber=3008# http://pta.org/advocacy/content2.cfm?ItemNumber=3008# California Department of Education http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/ http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/ New York Regents Common Core http://www.engageny.org/common-core-assessments http://www.engageny.org/common-core-assessments Riverside County Office of Education… http://www.rcoe.us/educational-services/instructional-services/california-common- core-state-standards/ http://www.rcoe.us/educational-services/instructional-services/california-common- core-state-standards/ Back

CDE has an expansive list of “release questions.” In classrooms, all year, your students have been answering questions that are written to resemble these release questions, or practicing the actual questions. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp Utilize these questions to familiarize yourself and your child with the style of assessment they’ll be taking. Make sure that you maintain contact with your child’s teachers with questions. Back

The College Board (creator of the SAT) announced just last week that they would be revamping the SAT to incorporate principles of the Common Core. Students transitioning to the Common Core now will be taking an SAT (starting in the Spring of 21016) that resembles the new assessment style. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/06/education/major- changes-in-sat-announced-by-college-board.html?_r=1 http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/06/education/major- changes-in-sat-announced-by-college-board.html?_r=1 Back
