"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.“ the founding fathers fear that the Federal Government might oppress the population if the people did not have the means to defend themselves as a nation and as individuals. I believe that the government should provide a stronger role in regulating handguns and related firearms but not banning it. Getting rid of guns does not necessarily mean that there will be no crime or a decrease in crime. I also believe that society benefits from the use of firearms in the hands of responsible citizens and trying to keep firearms from responsible citizens does more harm than good. Gun Is Not The Problem It’s The People

Gun control does not mean that we are safer it means the responsible citizens don’t get a gun where others will get it from the black market which means that we are more likely to die because we can not protect ourselves. In 1976, D.C. had one of the strictest gun-control laws in the country. The murder rate since that time has raised 134% while the overall rate for the country has decreased 2%. And yet other states with less gun laws like Virginia has one of the lowest murder rates in the country. And Norway who has the highest rate of gun ownership in Western Europe, possesses the lowest murder rate. Restricting firearms has helped make England more crime-ridden than the U.S. In the four years of banning from 1997 to 2001, the rate of violent crime doubled in England. Your chances of being targeted in London are now six times greater than in New York. England's rates of assault, robbery, and burglary are far higher than America's.

Citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times each year, which means that firearms are used 60 times more often for protection than to shoot with criminal intent. Of these defensive shootings, more than 200,000 are by women defending themselves against sexual abuse. John Lott from the University of Florida found that 98% of the time when people use guns defensively, simply showing a firearm will cause a criminal to break off an attack. Lott also found that less than 2% of the cases is the gun fired, and 3/4 of those are warning shots. So its clear that if guns were to be banned the only protection we have left is the cops which means that the criminal will have a little more time to finish the crime before the cops get there.

study found that the nine European nations with the lowest rates of gun ownership) have a combined murder rate three times higher than that of the nine nations with the highest rates of gun ownership States which have passed concealed-carry laws have seen their murder rate fall by 8.5 percent, rapes by 5 percent, aggravated assaults by 7 percent and robbery by 3 percent. In 1986, Maryland banned small, affordable handguns called Saturday night specials. Within two years, Maryland’s murder rate increased by 20 percent, surpassing the national murder rate by 33 percent Australia's banning results Assaults are up 8.6 percent; Amazingly, armed robberies have climbed nearly 45 percent; Countrywide, homicides are up 3.2 percent; In the Australian state of Victoria, gun homicides have climbed 300 percent; In the 25 years before the gun bans, crime in Australia had been dropping steadily; There has been a reported "dramatic increase" in home burglaries and assaults on the elderly. 53% of English burglaries occur while people are at home
