5 Hammurabi’s Code of Law I. Hammurabi’s Code -In 1790 BC or BCE, king Hammurabi wrote the world’s first large collection of laws. -There were 282 specific laws. II. Legal Principles (beliefs) of Hammurabi -”An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” -Punishments were based on the social class of the lawbreaker. -Wealthy citizens would pay fines, commoners (regular people) would face physical punishment. -Government had a responsibility for what occurred in society

Each group will be assigned two laws from Hammurabi’s Code to analyze. On your group’s Examination Sheet, address these questions: 1) Do we have a similar law today? 2) What aspect (area) of life does this law affect? 3) Whom is this law designed to benefit? 4) Why do you think this law was needed? 5) What kinds of things might happen if the laws did not exist?
