The Gospel According to Luke 14: 1-6 Opening Prayer In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

A reading from the Gospel According to Luke. On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, “Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?” But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. Then he said to them, “Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?” But they were unable to answer his question. The Gospel According to Luke 14: 1-6

Brief Summary of the Reading In this passage, Jesus is teaching about the purpose of the Sabbath day. The usual interpretation of the Third Commandment (“Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.”) is that one should refrain from working on this day. But Jesus’ interpretation of this Commandment is that the best way to keep holy and honor God on the Sabbath day is to serve others, especially those who are in need. The Gospel According to Luke 14: 1-6

Silent Reflection How do you honor God by keeping holy the Sabbath day? –Do you pray or go to Mass to worship God? –Do you serve those in need within your community? –Do you refrain from vile things and impure thoughts? –Do you take a break from the craziness of your everyday life in the world? –Do you relax and take time for yourself? The Gospel According to Luke 14: 1-6

Closing Prayer Prayer for Generosity of St. Ignatius of Loyola Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; To give, and not to count the cost; To fight, and not to heed the wounds; To toil, and not to seek for rest; To labor, and to ask for no reward Except that of knowing that I am doing your will.
