The Christian Life Our Goal {181} We want to look at both aspects of our faith: doctrine and experience. Not only to understand these themes better but also to have been enriched as far as Christian experience is concerned. One focus: the One in whom “we live, and move, and have our being.”

The Christian Life Lesson 11, June 13 The Christian Life Lesson 11, June 13

STEWARDSHIP Key Text Matthew 25:29 NIV “ ‘Everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance’.”

STEWARDSHIP Initial Words {313} Stewardship is not limited to caring for financial resources and to making sure that God gets His 10 percent. So much more is involved. “The term steward is misunderstood and even foreign in our society. We do not have any terms in our modern vocabulary that carry the richness of this term.

STEWARDSHIP Initial Words {313} Caretaker fails to capture the responsibility laid on the steward. Manager seems inadequate to describe the relationship between owner and steward. Custodian is too passive. Agent is too self-serving. Ambassador is too political. Guardian is too closely tied to parental responsibilities.” Warden is too administrative.

STEWARDSHIP Quick Look 1. Stewards of Talents and Time (Matthew 25:14-19) 2. Stewards of Body Temple and Treasures (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20) 3. Stewards for Eternity (Matthew 24:42-47)

STEWARDSHIP 1. Stewards of Talents and Time Matthew 25:14-19 NIV “ ‘A man going on a journey … called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents … to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. … After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.’ ”

1.Stewards of Talents Realities of the Parable {314} 1. We all have talents. 2. We do not all have the same number of talents. 3. Some refuse to use their talents. 4. Not using your talents is a serious business. The issue of being faithful stewards is the vital characteristic of discipleship.

1.Stewards of Time A Balanced Life {316} The Bible does not praise workaholics, nor does it have any commendations for those who always take it easy. As always, there is a balance, one in which we get done the things we need to get done, while at the same time we don’t burn ourselves emotionally or physically.

1.Stewards of Time A Balanced Life {316} God has the first claim on our time. We manifest this in our keeping the Sabbath and our daily time for prayer and worship. Our loved ones also are entitled to a fair share of our time. Then there is time for work, for leisure…. The church also claims a substantial part of our time.

STEWARDSHIP 2. Stewards of Body Temple and Treasures 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 NIV “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…. You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

2. Stewards of Body Temple “Not Your Own” {318} Stewardship of our bodies implies taking good care of our health. It has to do not only with what we eat but also with the amount of rest we take and with keeping fit through adequate exercise. And there can be no question of using substances that are addictive or otherwise harmful.

2. Stewards of Body Temple “Not Your Own” {318} “Health is not to be a preoccupation. An overriding preoccupation with health can be a form of idolatry that gets in the way of a satisfying relationship with God. Health is to enable service to God, but is not an end in itself.”—Leo R Van Dolson and J Robert Spangler Healthy, Happy, Holy 43

2. Stewards of Treasure Material Possessions {320} 1. Everything begins with God. 2. God takes first place in all we have and do. 3. God expects His people to return to Him at least 10 percent of their wealth. 4. The more we give, the more we are blessed.

Matthew 24:42-47 NIV “Keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. … Who then is the faithful servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants…. It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. He will put him in charge of all his possession. STEWARDSHIP 3. Stewardship for Eternity

While Waiting {322} We are waiting for the Owner to return. Soon He will come and will want to know what we have done with our gifts, our time, our physical strength, and our material resources. Every effort placed in our stewardship assignment is fully worth it when we hear our master say, “Come and share your master’s happiness” (Matthew 25:21 NIV).

3. Stewardship for Eternity While Waiting {322} While we wait, we live with a purpose. It is not waiting in idleness, but we wait as dedicated disciples who are keen stewards over all we have been given. “We are to be vigilant, watching for the coming of the Son of man; and we must also be diligent; working as well as waiting is required.” The Adventist Home 23

Final Words EGW The SDA Bible Comm 5:1100 {324} “The Lord will not require from those who are poor that which they have not to give. He will not require from the sick the active energies which bodily weakness forbids. No one need mourn because he cannot glorify God with talents that were never entrusted to him. But if you have only one talent, use it well, and it will accumulate.”
