Other Requirements Research must align with CSREES and program goals 25% must be committed to funded multistate projects 25% must have integrated/extension component CRIS reporting required for all CALS research!

CALS Allocation Priorities and Procedures Federal and State priorities Graduate training (approx. 140 RA’s) New faculty start-ups ($450K-$500K) in applicable sciences Funding reallocated annually (as projects terminate) in a competitive process Typical project: RA + fringes + $3-5K supplies/student hourly/travel/etc. Impending issue: tuition remission

Tuition Remission Not allowed under Formula Fund rules Exemption granted by UW-Madison through FY09 Partial exemption for FY10 (for projects started in FY07) PI/Dept. will need to find unrestricted funds to cover tuition remission Policy on grad students vs. post-docs, other appointments must be reviewed

Why are these funds important to us? Provides flexibility to support research issues important to CALS and WI Start-ups for new faculty Capital Equivalent to 10+% of state funds

Allowable Expenses Must follow OMB Circulars Must pertain to projects One computer purchase per project –50% match is required –Not allowed in final year of project Rules listed in policies and procedures handout Ask if in doubt!

Unallowable Expenses No memberships (unless data provided) No capital equipment in final year of project No tuition remission allowed No Computer access charges

Capital Capital items must be directly related to an approved project and cannot be in the final year of a project Requests must come through faculty with approved projects and be given priority by their departments 50% match is required Priority is given to requests that have the support of multiple departments

Reporting Requirements CRIS Reports Financial Reports Update to 5-year Plan of Work Annual Report of Work

Plan of Work Reporting Number of Graduate degrees granted Number of peer-reviewed publications Number of patents disclosed Number of patents granted This information needs to be reported by department by January 10 of each year
