1
Aviation Runway Cleaning Systems Manufactured by Osprey USA
2
Problem? Rubber and particle build up leads to reduced runway friction values Friction values must be maintained to insure FAA compliance and meet safety requirements Runway downtime results in reduced airport productivity
4
Runway surface is designed with grooves and rough surface to provide maximum friction even during rain and snow environments
5
Planes deposit rubber on runway surface, filling in grooves and rocky surfaces.
Reduces friction values
6
Current Mainstream Solution
Application of corrosive chemical which breaks down rubber build up, followed by application of thousands of gallons of water and repeated scrubbing with high power steel brooms. Residue is either recovered by vacuum systems or washed to side of runway by water sprayers.
7
Benefits Can hire a contractor to perform cleaning at a cost to airport budget Chemicals are readily available and can be applied by water sprayers
8
Drawbacks Damage to Equipment Damage to runways
Risk of not achieving sufficient friction readings Messy residue Environmental hazard Exorbitant Cost
9
Damage to Equipment
10
Damage to Equipment: Runway Sweepers
Metal brooms must be replaced after approximately 80 hours of normal operation. A minimum of 4” broom pattern must be used in order to scrub runway surface, resulting in reduced life expectancy of brooms Replacement Cost: approximately $ per broom plus replacement and cleaning labor
11
Damage to Sprayers Corrosive chemical dissolves rubber seals, hoses, pumps, gaitors and valves in chemical sprayers Damages truck tires of equipment involved
12
Damage to Runways Steel Brooms gradually wear down concrete surface, resulting in the need for costly runway replacement or resurfacing every several years.
13
When current process results in failed friction readings:
Redo Cleaning Process first. If not: Skidabrader (expensive shot blaster) must be used to achieve friction readings -- $0.13 per square foot ($104,000/runway) plus $ for mobilization Shot blasting severely damages runway surface, which must be replaced after being shot blasted twice Approximately $10 million to resurface asphalt runways. More for Concrete surface
14
Messy Dissolved rubber creates huge mess, coating machinery and gumming up brooms. Very difficult to clean and work with
15
Environmental Hazard Chemicals and dissolved rubber contaminate:
Seeps into ground water Exposes workers to Chemical hazard. Both components of most popular chemical cleaning agent have caused accidental deaths in humans and have several other severe effects on plant and animal tissue Enormous waste of fresh water to wash chemical off

Equipment Approximate costs
(2)Sprayer: $280,000/Sprayer (5) Truck and Broom: $310,000/Broom Water Truck: $100,000 Replacement Brooms: $4000/broom (2) ARFF Trucks: Variable by Operating and Manning Cost
21
Maintenance Cleaning of Rubber off Equipment
Replacement of Brooms (several times/cleaning) Damaged pumps, seals, valves, hoses on sprayers due to chemical erosion
22
Chemical Cost $485.00 – $600.00 per 55 gallon barrel
50-55 barrels / runway Chemical Cost per Runway per cleaning: $24,250-$33,000 If friction values are not achieved first time this cost increases. In hot environments it is difficult to keep chemical from evaporating before it takes effect.
23
Manpower 1 Operations Manager 2 ARFF Operators 9 Maintenance Personnel
20-25 hours to clean 1 runway man hours per runway *Numbers based on 8000 ft of runway, 100ft wide
24
Runway Damage If traditional cleaning process can not achieve sufficient friction readings must use alternate method. Can result in shot blasting to achieve readings Approximately $10 Million to replace general aviation asphalt runway Much higher cost for concrete runway replacement

SOLUTION?
26
OSPREY
27
Rubber Removed Surface Intact
28
BENEFITS You can purchase your own or have us contract to clean your runways Proven effectiveness Minimal wear to runways Huge Cost Savings Reduced manpower Convenient Reduced runway downtime Flexibility/ Accessories Safety Environmentally Sensitive
29
Proven Effectiveness OSPREY Runway Cleaners have been used effectively since 1992 on airports and roads in Europe, South America and Asia Busiest Airport in the world, Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok uses an OSPREY machine
30
Minimal Wear on Runway By precision control of water pressure values the Osprey leaves runway surface intact, while lifting all rubber and grit out of grooves and off runway surface
31
Reduced Manpower Osprey operated by 1 employee
Capable of cleaning over 20,000 square feet per hour of operation. Approximately 40 man hours to clean 8,000 feet of runway 100 feet wide Can use personnel to perform other duties instead of just cleaning runway
32
Huge Cost Savings Reduced number of machines needed to accomplish cleaning No chemical cost No need to replace expensive brooms Reduced manpower wages Extremely low maintenance costs Osprey unit requires minimal daily maintenance
33
Cost savings cont’d Extends life of runway when compared to traditional cleaning methods Uses include cleaning around terminals, negating the need for scrubber units Used for drain and surface water drain cleaning (with suitable accessories) Can be used to power emergency tools, cutting equipment and fire suppression fog lances
34
Unique Purchasing Options
Osprey Units can be purchased out of Airport Improvement Project (AIP) funds instead of airport dollars. OSPREY-USA is a HUB Zone company so can be purchased using HUB Zone dollars Due to elimination of chemical and rubber debris from environment, grant money is available through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
35
Convenience Power to clean your runways and terminals when YOU want
Instead of contracting out your runway cleaning, the Osprey is easy to operate and can be done on a regular maintenance cycle or when friction values get low, not when the contractor can schedule you in for cleaning Water tank can be filled in 15 minute from a fire hydrant Debris tank emptied in seconds
36
Reduced Runway Downtime
Increased speed and ease of cleaning results in less time a runway must be closed for cleaning
37
Myths about High Pressure Water Removal Systems
Damages Runway Time Consuming Expensive Long set up and break down times
38
Myth 1: Damages Runway Truth: Although Water can be a very destructive force and will damage the runway if not handled correctly, the Osprey balances several Safety Factors to ensure acceptable rubber removal without damaging runway surface
39
Safety Factors Water Pressure: There is optimal water pressures depending on surface type. We produce high pressure and Ultra high pressure systems depending on surface type Water Volume: The right amount of water will not damage runway, while increased volumes will. E.g: a grain of sand traveling at 20 feet/second will sting, while a 10 pound stone at the same speed will kill. Nozzle Height: The lower the nozzle, the greater the velocity of the water and the greater likelihood for runway damage
40
Safety Factors Cont’d Nozzle Angle: Water at a 90 degree angle to the pavement will dig in and increase likelihood for damage. Water at lesser degrees will glance off and ‘peel’ rubber without any damage to surface. Nozzles angles have been finely calibrated to ensure a good clean with no damage Nozzle Rotation Speed: Higher speeds equals more jet strikes per lineal foot and less ‘dwell’ time. This ensures safe cleaning Forward Speed of Truck: Must be balanced with rotational speed of nozzles. Will not damage lights on runway surface. Epoxy is resistant to damage from sprayers
41
Osprey Safety Mechanisms
20 years of research and development have gone into creating the Osprey, which balances all safety mechanisms to ensure safe cleaning --Fine calibration of water pressure, water volume, nozzle height, angle of nozzle, and speed of nozzle rotation by hand and computer controls allows smooth uniform cleaning that removes rubber, not concrete aggregate, rock, or silicone seals
42
FOD Reduction Sweepers often leave behind pieces of steel, which break off from brooms. The Osprey eliminates this and other FOD from runway!
43
International Airports Utilizing High Pressure Water Cleaning Technology Reporting Reduced Runway Damage: Location # of Units Year Hong Kong Kai Tak ,1996 Saudi Arabia Dept. of Civil Aviation Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority JFK New York (Contractor) Venezuela (Contractor) ,1996 Guangzhou Airport China Dubai Civil Aviation Abu Dhabi Civil Aviation Kuwait (Contractor) Beijing International Airport China Bermuda (Contractor) UK contractor (EPOK) Hong Kong Chep Lap Kok Ministry of Aviation Greece Saudi Arabia (Contractor) Korea Airport Authority
44
Myth 2: Time Consuming Cleaning arms are over 6 feet wide
One Osprey cleans over 20,000 square feet per hour of operation in the heaviest build up areas Achieves superior friction values in 1 pass No Prep time for runway
45
Reduced Manpower Osprey operated by 1 employee
Approximately 40 man hours to clean 8,000 feet of runway 100 feet wide Non-Vacuum option requires use of separate vacuum truck
46
Myth 3: Expensive Truth: Huge Cost Savings over life of Osprey
Unique purchasing options available through grants, AIP funds and HUB zone money, resulting in little or no expense to Airport
47
Myth 4: Long set up and break down times
The Osprey is ready for use in minutes When rapid evacuation of runway is required the equipment is immediately ready for travel at full road speeds Extremely Operator Friendly
48
Versatility All Osprey units are custom built and can be altered to fit your individual needs Also used as a paint stripe remover Can also be used as a drain cleaner (with proper attachments) Can be used to power emergency tools, cutting equipment and fire suppression fog lances
49
Accessories Osprey can be fitted with built in vacuum unit
Hand accessories are available to clean small, hard to reach areas Can be fitted with storm drain cleaning jetting system Hand tools for removing paint and rust from concrete or steel
50
Safety Comes equipped with computerized automatic start/stop controls to eliminate risk of damaging runway Eliminates exposure of workers to toxic chemicals
51
Environmentally Sensitive
Ecologically safe Clean pure water that is filtered before sprayed on runway. So safe you can drink it. Not something you can say about current ‘environmentally safe’ chemicals that are used Easy disposal of rubber waste Significantly reduces amount of clean water needed to clean runway.
52
Bottom Line You get a reliable, long lasting machine that will keep your friction values better than chemicals can get them. The cost up front is minimal to Airport budgets Results in huge long term savings Requires less manpower Built in the USA
53
Options Because we custom build your machine we can create the perfect machine for your cleaning needs and budget. Filters and vacuums can be added to recycle the water for areas where water is scarce Trailer Units available Contracting option also available for us to come clean your runways
