7 th Grade Technology KITTATINNY REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MR. SHEA Marble Rollercoasters

 Using you class binder  Will become your own quick reference manual.  Take notes on EVERYTHING you can..  There will be a test at the end of the project on the material covered in this lecture.  You never know when you are going to need to use them.  Ask questions & give input or ideas  It will count towards a better class participation grade.

Students will be able to design and create a rollercoaster track for a marble with the LONGEST RUN TIME from start to finish.

Time Warp: Roller Coaster Science https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrD3uo5DXNM GED Physics: Kinetic and potential Energy in a roller coaster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dpBVtAbKJU

 Law of Conservation of Energy – In a closed system, energy is transformed from one type of energy to another. The total amount of energy stays the same.  Work – Moving an object using a force over a distance.  Energy – The ability to do work.

 Kinetic Energy – Energy of velocity / speed  Potential Energy – Type of energy of position. Relative to other objects or places.

 A rubber band flying through the air has KINETIC ENERGY.  When you are walking or running your body is exhibiting KINETIC ENERGY.  Potential Energy is energy that is stored in an object. If you stretch a rubber band, you will give it POTENTIAL ENERGY.  The more you stretch the rubber band, the more POTENTIAL ENERGY it gains.  As the rubber band is released, potential energy is changed to motion.  Typically, potential energy is converted into kinetic energy.

Use ‘ ’ signs to describe kinetic and potential energy at each of the following points

No part of the rollercoaster can be taller than the first hill, UNLESS there is another force applied to get the car/ train to the top.
