LIBRARY SERVICES The Athens High School Library Media Center has a wealth of resources available to teachers and students alike. Teacher benefits include: Lesson Collaboration - Let us work with you to create a unique and productive learning experience for your students. If you wish to bring your class to the library, please fill out the Library Request Form. Information Literacy Opportunities - For your students, this can be accomplished through mini lessons in conjunction with your curriculum, or as a comprehensive lesson in itself.

LIBRARY SERVICES Teacher benefits also include: Media Center Resources - Through a combination of print, audio-visual, and online resources, most curriculum needs can be met. If you wish to check out videos from the Media Center, please complete the Video Approval Form. One-on-One Assistance - Let us brainstorm with you ideas for lesson activities. We can also help you look for resources weak curriculum areas. Let’s look at these services in more detail…

EQUIPMENT LIBRARY SERVICES

EQUIPMENT: The library provides A/V equipment for classroom use. It is available for full-year checkout at the beginning of the year. The types available are: Document cameras A/V carts Data projectors (if classroom does not have one) Limited amount of OVH projectors and cassette players

LIBRARY SERVICES EQUIPMENT: The library also provides equipment for temporary classroom use, and can be checked out for short periods of time. The types available are: Portable screens Digital camera Easel TV/VCR/DVD combo carts Flip video camera Microphone headset

LESSON COLLABORATION LIBRARY SERVICES

LESSON COLLABORATION: The librarian is available to assist teachers with integrating research and information literacy into lesson plans. Steps required: Meet with Mrs. Phillips to discuss subject matter and ways to implement lesson, creating lesson plan. Schedule class time in library. Teacher fills out Library Request Form. Mrs. Phillips designs web page on library site with resources needed for that lesson (more later) Students come to library as class and lesson is implemented. Teacher and Mrs. Phillips evaluate student performance after lesson is complete.

LIBRARY FACILITY RESERVE PROCEDURES: The AHS Library Media Center is equipped to handle two classes per period. In order to make efficient use of library personnel, teachers wishing to utilize the facility for class purposes will need to check the library schedule and fill out the Library Request Form no later than 24 hours in advance of the requested time. The form can be found on the library website and in the library.

LIBRARY PASSES: To effectively monitor student traffic in the library, teachers are issued six yellow laminated passes. These passes contain the teacher’s name, room #, and are numbered 1-6. No more than 6 students may come unsupervised from any class at any time. Students will return to class with a paper library pass that is time and date-stamped to indicate the time the student left the library. The laminated library passes will then be placed in the teacher’s box for reuse. In order to keep up with library passes, it is advised that teachers keep a log of students who use the passes.

STUDENT PROJECT DISPLAYS: The library regularly displays student work from class projects throughout the year. Examples include: Altered book project Family shields Game boards Art projects Drawings Scaled replicas If you have student work to display, contact Mrs. Phillips or Mrs. Pugh to designate library space and length of time for work to be on display.

TITLE REQUESTS LIBRARY SERVICES

TITLE REQUESTS: If a teacher has a particular book or video that they would like to see the library have for classroom use, please do not hesitate to ask for it. Most title requests are filled as funds allow. Purchasing is made through Barnes and Noble and titlewise.com. You can also request your title on the website via the ‘All About Books’ page. Simply click on ‘Request a Book’ in the listing and fill out the online form.

SCHOOL STORE: The Library Media Center carries basic school supplies for students at a minimal cost. Students may come to the library to purchase supplies before and after school and during lunch. LAMINATING: This service is also provided to teachers for class posters and manipulatives. 24-hour notice is needed for laminating to be completed. Items to be laminated need to be bound with paper clips or rubber bands and have your name on it.

LIBRARY WEBSITE SUBJECT RESOURCES: Reliable websites are continuously collected and subdivided by subject/course content. This is one of the most fluid areas of the website. Those teachers wishing to have links added to a subject can e-mail those to sphillips@athensisd.net.sphillips@athensisd.net
