Are they surprised about the amount the world cup is costing Brazil to host? Can they think of other things that governments might spend money on other than education and healthcare? Living in the wider world * Full curriculum links in notes section Main Looking at the statements pupils should pick one that they agree with the most. Using that statement pupils should conduct their own online research to create a short piece of persuasive writing, justifying their opinion with supporting evidence. Set your pupils off by reading our Case study: Gabriel’s story. Activity Sheet 1/ Statements Gabriel case study poster Activity Sheet 2/Persuasive Writing English: KS2/3 Writing – composition Reading - comprehension Plenary Stick all the statements on one wall. Ask pupils to stand by the statement they have chosen. Ask a representative beside each statement to read out their persuasive piece of writing. Ask pupils if they still agree or disagree with their original statement now they have heard from other pupils in the class. Ask them to stand beneath a new statement if their views have changed. Can they explain why? Ask pupils to vote by raising their hand if they agree with the Brazilian government on spending £6.8 million or if they disagree. Objective:To explore and understand that the Brazilian government has a choice about how it spends public money Outcome: Create a piece of persuasive writing

3 ActionAid schools | July 2014 | 3 Activity Sheet 1/Statements The World Cup will benefit everyone living in Brazil. The Brazilian government should have spent the money it used to build stadiums to build schools and hospitals. Hosting the World Cup was money well spent as it will create lots of new jobs for the Brazilian people. The World Cup won’t bring any long term benefits for people living in Brazil.
