Amidst war and the height of the struggles of the Great Depression President FDR spoke about Four “Essential Freedoms.” (1934). The first is freedom of speech and expression -- everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way -- everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want -- which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants -- everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear -- which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor-- anywhere in the world. FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT

1)Why do you suppose that these were the four freedoms he chose to highlight as "essential?" 2)Obviously there are more than four freedoms that the President could have mentioned. Which potential freedoms did the President leave out? 3)What does “freedom” mean to you as an American citizen? How might someone’s answer to this question from a “less developed” country be different from yours? 4) How does “freedom” change over time? Are we less or more free now than 100 years ago? Why do you think so? 5)What does the Declaration of Independence tell us about the universality of human freedom? Use your RT!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK?
