5 What is Persuasive Writing  A persuasive essay is one which tries to convince a reader to believe what the writer believes about a certain topic. It tells the writer’s opinion and why the reader should agree.

6 1. The purpose of a persuasive essay is to: a. To inform and explain b. To tell a story c. To convince the reader of something d. To summarize what you just read

7 What is included in a Persuasive Essay?  A Persuasive Essay will have the following:  An Introduction—grab the reader’s attention and briefly tell what the essay is about. (1 paragraph)  A Body—develop three or more main points each in a separate paragraphs, with supporting details and a closing sentence. Also, try to anticipate the opposing argument, and refute it. (3 paragraphs)  A Conclusion—wrap up the topic and bring the essay to a satisfying close. (1 paragraph) (Total Paragraphs 5)

11 Now It’s Your Turn  Dr. Tutop wants to installed snack and soda machines in the lunchroom. The snack machines offer candy, chips, and baked goods. Students may use the machines at lunch time or after school. Several parents have complaints that these foods are unhealthy. They want the machines removed from the school.  Write a persuasive paper saying whether you agree or disagree that snack and soda machines should be in your school’s lunchroom.
