4 DAILY MATERIALS n Reading Journal (supplied by TEMS) n A binder or folder n Supply of loose-leaf paper with three holes n Pencil and pens n Coloring/art supplies (optional)

5 CURRICULUM n Independent Reading –One book per month –Bring book to class every day –Encourage to read at home 20-30 min. –Monthly book report (to begin in Oct)

8 HOMEWORK (1-1.25 hrs total) n 2-3 nights a week –Vocabulary –Unfinished class work –Independent reading –Book reports n Lose points if not completed on time n Emphasis on detail and neatness

9 How can parents help at home? n Encourage quiet reading time each evening. n Model the importance of reading in all areas of life: –Morning newspaper –Coupons –Manuals –Billboards, signs, advertisements n Ask your children about the books they are reading: –Can they explain the plot? –Can they describe the characters? –Can they apply the content to their own lives? n Encourage your children to explore unknown words: –Can they use other words in text to find meaning? –Can they make connections to known words? –Can they use the word properly?
