COGI Commission Interservice Group for Geographical Information in the Commission Presentation by Daniel Rase, Eurostat-Unit F4 (Regional Statistics and GIS) daniel.rase@cec.eu.int The GSDI - Sixth Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference September 16-19 th 2002 BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

The GSDI - Sixth Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference September 16-19 th 2002 BUDAPEST, HUNGARY What is COGI ? COGI is the OFFICIAL Commission Interservice group for Geographical information - Decisions taken by this group on standards, data policy, technical guidelines are mandatory for all the Commission services

WHY did we create this group? Lack of co-ordination on GI/GIS within the Commission Lack of awareness on the potential benefits of using GI/GIS Lack of consistency of data policy Poor visibility of EC activities Who is doing what within the Commission? The GSDI - Sixth Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference September 16-19 th 2002 BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

COGI First meeting in November 1999 Eurostat DG is the secretariat and chair of the group All services invited Participants: Eurostat, INFSO, ENV, REGIO, AGRI, TREN, FISH, RDT, JRC, EEA The GSDI - Sixth Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference September 16-19 th 2002 BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Mandate (1) Improve the availability of GI within the services of the Commission, mainly by proposing the joint acquisition of basic GI, where this complies with common specifications and meets the needs of multiple users Improve the level of awareness amongst middle and higher management within the Commission, of the value of geographic information and the power of relevant software tools and how it can contribute to the work of the European public service and eGovernment The GSDI - Sixth Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference September 16-19 th 2002 BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Mandate (2) Develop a data policy to be adhered to by all Commission services when adopting proposals for the collection of Geographic Information via Community policy and legislation and when disseminating this information to outside users at the lowest possible price, thereby stimulating the market for value-added services building on these data Reduce duplication of effort through better co-ordination between individual projects within the various services of the Commission The GSDI - Sixth Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference September 16-19 th 2002 BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
