3 responsibility Noun The state or fact of having a duty to deal with something. It is your responsibility to turn in your homework. Synonym = accountability

4 respect Verb to show regard or consideration for If you respect others, they will respect you. Synonym = honor

5 personal space Noun the region surrounding a person which they regard as theirs Please stay out of Billy’s personal space. Synonym = individual area

6 cite Verb To mention or bring forward as support, illustration, or proof In your research paper, please cite the web page where you found your information. Synonym = quote

7 resolution Noun The outcome of the conflict in a play or story. The resolution of our story is when the characters work our their problem. Synonym = solution

8 figurative language Noun Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, usually in Reading or Writing Please use two examples of figurative language in your personal narrative. Examples of figurative language: Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Alliteration, Idioms, Onomatopoeia

9 connotative meaning Noun an association or idea suggested by a word or phrase; implication The word “home” has the connotative meaning of a place of security, comfort and family. Synonym = imply or suggest

10 tone Noun The attitude a writer takes toward his or her subject, characters, and readers The tone of the story is one of suspense. Synonym = mood

11 theme Noun The main idea or the basic meaning of a literary work The theme of the story is one of growing up. Synonym = the point; main idea When you are trying to find the theme, ask yourself, “What is the point?”

12 plot Noun The sequence of events or happenings in a literary work At the beginning of the plot, Tommy is very confused. Synonym = scheme or set up

13 point of view Noun The vantage point from which a narrative or story is told. This story is told from the author’s point of view. Synonym = perspective

14 compare Verb consider or describe as the same or equal I will compare apples to oranges and find that these are both fruits. Synonym = equate

15 contrast Verb To show differences In contrast to an orange, an apple is red. Synonym = different

16 genre Noun Artistic category or style The genre of “Old Yeller” is historical fiction. Synonym - type

17 technical vocabulary Noun Words that are associated with a particular content area or topic Grammar has technical vocabulary words like noun and verb. Synonym = specialized words

18 integrate Verb To join with something else; unite. Please make sure you integrate your research into your paper. Synonym - join

19 claims Noun Arguable statements Please find evidence that supports your claims. Synonym = declaration

20 argument Noun An exchange of diverging or opposite views Please support your argument with facts. Synonym = debate

21 credible Adjective Able to be believed; convincing. I hope your witness has a credible reputation. Synonym = trustworthy

22 plagiarism Noun The practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. If you don’t give credit for your research, you are committing plagiarism. Synonym = stealing ideas

23 delineate Verb Describe or portray (something) precisely. The team captain will delineate the boundaries for dodge ball. Synonym = define

24 nonrestrictive elements Noun groups of words that can be removed without changing the meaning of the sentence Nonrestrictive elements do not change the meaning of a sentence. Synonym = not essential information

25 parenthetical elements Noun any sentence element that interrupts the forward movement of a clause A parenthetical elements may be surrounded by commas. Synonym = explanatory

26 setting Noun When and where a story takes place The author did a great job of describing the setting. Synonym = location
