1 Revelation 3:7-13 The Church of Christ In
7 "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ' I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; Revelation 3:7-13

2 Revelation 1:11 (NKJV) 11 saying, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last," and, "What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea." 3. Pergamos 4. Thyatira 5. Sardis 2. Smyrna 6. Philadelphia 7. Laodicea 1. Ephesus

3 Instruction needed for all Christians of all ages
These churches needed hope, courage, comfort & most needed rebuke- (Acts 14:22; 2 Tim 3:12) Instruction needed for all Christians of all ages Was / is being a Christian “worth it?” - Mat 10:28; 16:24-27; Rev 14:12,13 3. Pergamos 4. Thyatira 5. Sardis 2. Smyrna 6. Philadelphia 7. Laodicea 1. Ephesus

4 Jesus is said to be “in the midst” of the seven golden lamp-stands, which are the seven churches (1:13,20). The Lord is intimately aware of what transpires within every congregation. He “knows” their situation, works, faithfulness & sins (2:2,9,13,19; 3:1,8,15; Heb 4:13). The Lord sees us as we really are (2 Corinthians 5:10).

5 The Sixth Church: Philadelphia
"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,” Rev 3:17 Philadelphia was located on the Cogamus River, 28 miles southeast of Sardis. Originally known as Rabbath- ammon and was beautified by Ptolemy ( B.C.). – Strategically located on one of the greatest highways to the east - the “Persian Royal Road.” [i.e., “built with the deliberate attempt to Hellenize barbarian wilds of the east,” (Ramsey, 391,392)] This city originally known as Rabbath-ammon and was beautified by Ptolemy Philadelphus ( B.C.). 2. The city was renamed in honor of the king of Pergamos “Attalus II”  a. He was given the title of "Philadelphus" because of his loyalty to his elder brother, Eumenes II, who was the king of Lydia. Philadelphia is supposed to have been founded between 189 B.C. and 138 B.C., either by Eumenes, king of Pergamum, or his younger brother Attalus; but, "one thing is certain: its name commemorates the loyalty of Attalus to his brother." F26 The word means "lover of his brother," a fact evident in these events: (1) a false rumor of Eumenes' assassination led to Attalus' acceptance of the crown, which he relinquished when his brother returned to Greece, and (2) Attalus resisted Roman encouragement to overthrow Eumenes and become king. F27 The great earthquake which devastated twelve cities in the very district where these seven churches lay (17 A.D.) was particularly destructive in Philadelphia, due to its being nearest the fault line. For an extended period afterwards, there continued to be many more earthquakes, especially at Philadelphia, which was called the "city of many earthquakes." Some of the citizens refused any longer to live within the city proper.

"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,” Rev 3:17 The earthquake which devastated twelve cities in 17 A.D. was particularly destructive in Philadelphia, due to its being nearest the fault line. Rebuilt with the help of Tiberius. Frequent shocks felt and the cities inhabitants lived in constant fear of being destroyed again. "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,” Rev 3:17 The adjacent plain was famous for wine; thus, Philadelphia’s chief pagan cult was the worship of Dionysius, the Greek god of vine and wine, worshiped in drunken orgies. Called “little Athens” because of its numerous temples and festivals to pagan deities. If a man had served the city well, a column in one of the pagan temples would be dedicated to him. This city originally known as Rabbath-ammon and was beautified by Ptolemy Philadelphus ( B.C.). 2. The city was renamed in honor of the king of Pergamos “Attalus II”  a. "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,” Rev 3:17 Christ’s Self Designation He who is HOLY, “separate from common condition and use” (Mounce. 1071) The Lord God is called “the Holy One of Israel” 25 times in Isaiah alone (cf. Isaiah 43:3; Ps. 111:9). The Messiah, is the “Holy One” (Ps 16:10; Lk 1:35; Mk 1:24; Ac 2:27; 3:14; Heb 7:26; 1 Pet 2:22; Rev 4:8). Jesus is the divine, promised Messiah, Savior of the world. Revelation 3:7 (NKJV) 7 ". . . 'These things says He who is holy, He who is true, "He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens": He who is Holy - He lived in the flesh pure and undefiled – (Heb 7:26) – Psalm 16:10 (NKJV) For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. (Acts 2:27) Mark 1:24 (NKJV) saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are--the Holy One of God!" Acts 3:14 (NKJV) But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, Hebrews 7:26 (NKJV) For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 1 Peter 2:22 (NKJV) "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth"; He Who is true - He is Divine and cannot lie, therefore He can be trusted to do that which He promised – (1 John 5:20) – 1 John 5:20 (NKJV) And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. Matthew 24:35 (NKJV) Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. John 14:6 (NKJV) Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Hebrews 13:8-9 (NKJV) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. [9] Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them. The key, (Is 22:22 One had to go through Eliakim to see king Hezekiah) – Isaiah 22:22 (NKJV) The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; So he shall open, and no one shall shut; And he shall shut, and no one shall open. Matthew 16:18-19 (NKJV) And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. [19] And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." No one can approach the Father except through Jesus, (John 14:6) – (The analogy is that Judaism has been replaced by Christianity as the true religion.) He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens: He has all authority and power to govern access into Divine fellowship. John 17:2 (NKJV) as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. (cf. Col 1:16-19)

"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,” Rev 3:17 Christ’s Self Designation He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens, - The LORD Jesus has all authority (Mat 28:18; Eph 1:22-23), He has all authority and power to govern access into Divine fellowship - (Jn 14:6) Thus we must hear & obey Him (Mat 17:5; 28:28), & act and speak by His authority (Col 3:17; 2 Jn 9). 14 The Sixth Church: Philadelphia
"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,” Rev 3:17 The Praise (vv. 8, 10) “An open door” represents access and opportunity. Christ is the Door, the only way to salvation and spiritual sustenance (John 10:7,9; 14:6). His faithful servants are given opportunities for success in His work that no one, not even Satan, can close (Acts 14:27; 1 Cor 16:9; 2 Cor 2:12; Col 4:2-3; Acts 5:38,39). Revelation 3:8 (NKJV) 8 I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. A little strength? . . . Not spiritual ineptness! The Lord does not open doors and give greater opportunities to those who are not willing or able to take advantage of them. Probably refers to their lack of material resources – (few in number, poor, lack of social prominence) Great strength – The Lord can use whatever we have and multiply our effectiveness – (Ep 3:20; 2 Cor. 9:8-11) Ephes. 3:20 (NKJV) Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 2 Cor. 9:8-11 (NKJV) And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. [9] As it is written: "He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever." [10] Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, [11] while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 1 Peter 4:11 (NKJV) If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. Having only one talent does not justify the burying of that talent – Mat 25:14- 30 We can all do something in teaching the lost! Some can teach and preach – but not all can!! 2 Tim. 2:2 (NKJV) And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Those that can need financial support – Philip. 1:4-5 (NKJV) always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, [5] for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, Those that can need hospitality extended to them – 1 Pet 4:8,9; Heb 13:1,2; Acts 16:15 1 Peter 4:8-9 (NKJV) And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins." [9] Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. Acts 16:15 (NKJV) And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay." So she persuaded us. Hebrews 13:1-2 (NKJV) Let brotherly love continue. [2] Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. Those that can preach need encouragement - Philip. 2:19 (NKJV) But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state.

"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,” Rev 3:17 The Praise (vv. 8, 10) “You have a little strength” Not spiritual ineptness! Perhaps small in number, impoverished, uneducated, i.e, physically or materially limited. It is NOT our own wisdom, eloquence, or ability that will bring spiritual success - “My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor 12:7-10; cf. Heb 11:34; Phili 4:13). 28 2 Thessalonians 1:3-12 (NKJV)
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, 4 so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, 5 which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer;

29 2 Thessalonians 1:3-12 (NKJV)
6 since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

30 2 Thessalonians 1:3-12 (NKJV)
9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.

31 2 Thessalonians 1:3-12 (NKJV)
11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
