Vocabulary: Muscle structure- p.609-610- 30.7-30.8 1.Tendon 2.Skeletal muscle 3.Myofibril 4.Sarcomere 5.Z lines 6.Thin filament -actin 7.Thick filament -myosin

Vocabulary: Muscle structure 1.Tendon- connective tissue that connects muscles to bone. 2.Skeletal muscle- produces body movement, consists of a bunch of muscle fibers/cells. 3.Myofibril- basic unit of muscle cells, causes the striations, consists of lots of sarcomeres. 4.Sarcomere- the region between two dark lines (Z lines) in a myofibril, contractile part of myofibril. 5.Z lines- consists of proteins that connect adjacent thin filaments. 6.Thin filament- two strands of protein actin wrapped around regulatory protein. 7.Thick filament- multiple strands of protein myosin.

Vocabulary: Muscle structure 8. Fasicle- group of muscle fibers 9. Muscle fiber- muscle cell 10. Myofibril- long filamentous organelle in muscle cells, has a banded appearance  Myofilaments- protein filaments- ex. Actin (thin filament) and myosin (thick filament)  Sarcomere- segment of myofibril from one Z line to the next, contractile unit of muscle. 11. Sarcoplasm- cytoplasm

Connective tissue coverings & membranous coverings Connective tissue coverings: Fascia- surrounds muscle group (fibrous ct &adipose) Epimysium- surrounds muscle – under fascia (fibrous ct & adipose) Perimysium- surrounds fasicle (fibrous ct) Endomysium- surrounds muscle cell/fiber (loose ct) & membranous coverings Sarcolemma- cell membrane of muscle cell. Sarcoplasmic reticulum (ER)- network of membranous channels that surrounds myofibrils. Tranverse tubules (T tubules)- network of membranous channels lying between to sections of sarcoplasmic reticulum & surrounding myofibrils.

1.Connective tissue surrounding a fascicle. 2.Connective tissue surrounding the entire muscle. 3.Contractile unit of muscle. 4.A muscle cell. 5.Thin connective tissue surrounding each muscle cell. 6.Plasma membrane of the muscle cell. 7.A long, filamentous organelle found within muscle cells that has a banded appearance. 8.Actin- or myosin- containing structure. 9.Cordlike extension of connective tissue beyond the muscle, serving to attach it to the bone. 10.A discrete bundle of muscle cells.
