Albert Aaron Rosenfeld was born into a Jewish family on 28 July 1885, beginning his working life as an apprentice tailor under his father, who had emigrated to Australia from Poland in the 1880s

Albert made two lasting impressions One on the Huddersfield club he played against for Australia And one on a local girl called Ethel who he returned to Yorkshire to marry He stayed here with her for the rest of his life

This rugby legend lived in Huddersfield in the same house for over 60 years He and Ethel were married for many years Albert worked driving a dustbin wagon until he was over 70 He died aged 85 in 1970

When Albert’s father left Poland in the 1800s he was escaping from terrible abuse of Jewish people in Europe

Oskar Schindler It brought the world’s attention to the life of this man Oskar Schindler saved hundreds of Jews from death during the Holocaust

The Holocaust was a terrible period in history when 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis

Sir Nicholas Winton This man has become known as ‘The English Schindler’ His name is Nicholas Winton

Sir Nicholas Winton He was born in 1909 Now 103 years old and still enjoys gardening and cooking In 2002 he was knighted for his actions during the Holocaust… …but for over forty years after the end of the Second World War nobody knew what brave deeds he had performed

Sir Nicholas Winton In 1988 his wife found some old papers in the attic Amongst them were details of many Jewish children from Czechoslovakia dating back to the 1930s When she asked her husband about these papers, his remarkable story emerged

Sir Nicholas Winton In 1938 the 29 year old businessman went to visit his friend Martin Blake in Prague which is the capital of Czechoslovakia

Sir Nicholas Winton He learned of the actions of the Nazis who had invaded the Sudetenland which was part of Czechoslovakia They were beginning to persecute Jewish people

Sir Nicholas Winton Nicholas knew it was important to get the children out of the country before things got worse He hired a hotel room and began to organise the mass escape

Sir Nicholas Winton The organisation he helped to set up right under the noses of the Nazis became known as the ‘Kindertransport’ This means ‘Children’s Transport’

Sir Nicholas Winton Winton got the English and Swedish governments to agree to take the refugees He organised families in England to agree to have a child to stay with them He often forged papers to help the families of children who wanted to get their children out

Sir Nicholas Winton Imagine the fears of parents and children who were going to be separated The children had no idea where they were going

Sir Nicholas Winton Winton organised eight train loads of children to be evacuated 669 children left The ninth train was due to leave on the day war was declared 250 children were taken on the train to Auschwitz and none survived

Sir Nicholas Winton Nicholas’ children were found homes all over Britain It was only when his wife found the papers that the world discovered this amazing story

Sir Nicholas Winton After his story became known, some of the people who he had saved managed to trace him They still meet up to remember their escape None of the parents who sent them away could ever be traced after the war

On 1 September 2009, survivors of the kindertransport and their families re-lived the trip on a vintage steam train to mark the seventieth anniversary of their escape They travelled from Prague to London on their three day journey

Before they set off, a brand new statue of Sir Nicholas Winton was unveiled at Prague Station
