Virtualization: Gartner Projections 4 million VMs by 2009 611 million virtualized PCs by 2011 IT infrastructure and operations deeply impacted by virtualization in 2012 100% of Fortune 500 run VMware in production Hundreds of manufactures making virtual appliances By 2010, virtualization will be the single most important technology for IT departments. – Gartner Research

Cloud Computing Gartner Inc. projects world-wide cloud-services revenue will rise 21.3% in 2009 to $56.3 billion. A style of computing where scalable and elastic IT-enabled capabilities are provided 'as a service' to external customers using Internet technologies“ Merrill Lynch last year estimated cloud-computing revenues would reach $160 billion in 2011.

What is different about VGrid MPLS - Layer 2 Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) A VPLS is a logical Ethernet-based bridge domain that bridges traffic between geographically distributed customer sites across a service provider’s MPLS network. The customer edge (ICW and INX) connect to the Provider Edge (PE) routers at the edge of the MPLS network. The PE routers, which form the VPLS, communicate over the MPLS LSP tunnels. This will provide an Layer-2 Ethernet Services between ICW and INX DataCenters.

Unified Computing Systems Abstraction of Processor an Memory Chassis interconnect is based on Data Center Ethernet Common Management that extends across multiple UCS 5100 chassis Reduced cost and complexity of FC and Ethernet conections

Business Discontinuity “The majority of businesses that suffer a catastrophe such as a fire or flood are, as a result, out of business within two years.” The Meta Group “93% of businesses that lose their data center for 10 days go bankrupt within a year.” National Archives & Records Administration
26
Limitations of Physical Disaster Recovery Tight coupling of Windows OS with hardware Recovery from tape slow, unreliable “Mission critical” server subset suspect Effective testing difficult and expensive IT staff may have other concerns in a disaster DR seen as costly IT silo
