2 WHAT DO ADVERBS DO? ADVERBS describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. ADVERBS describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. ADVERBS tell… * how *when *when *how often *how much *how much *where *where

3 What do adverbs look like? Very often, adverbs will have the suffix –ly at the end of the word. Examples: gently, quietly, abruptly 1. I gently brushed my new puppy. 2. The students quietly read. 3. Mrs. Smith abruptly left the meeting.

4 BE CAREFUL!!!!! Not all words that have the suffix –ly are adverbs!!!!! Examples: ugly, lively, friendly, 1. That is one ugly duckling! 2. That class is a lively bunch of characters! 3. Cinnamon is a friendly pony.

6 Adverbs modifying verbs 1. The nurse carefully examined my wound. How did the nurse examine the wound? Yes, “carefully” tells “how” so it is an adverb. It describes the verb examined.

7 Adverbs modifying adjectives The book on the shelf is quite heavy. How heavy was the book? Yes, it was “quite” heavy. “Quite” is an adverb modifying the adjective heavy.

8 Adverbs modifying other adverbs 1. The bell rang very suddenly. First ask yourself, “HOW did the bell ring?” Now, ask, “HOW suddenly?” Yes, “very” suddenly. “Very” is an adverb that is modifying another adverb.

9 Remember… Adverbs mainly answer HOW, WHEN, and WHERE. 1. The bird sits happily on the wire. How does the bird sit? Yes, “happily” is an adverb modifying the verb “sit.”

10 Remember…. Adverbs mainly tell HOW, WHEN, and WHERE. 1. You should speak now. When should you speak? Yes, “now” is an adverb telling when you should speak.

11 Remember… Adverbs mainly tell HOW, WHEN, or WHERE. 1. Lay the files there when you are finished. Lay the files “WHERE?” Yes, “there” is a adverb that answers the question “where.”

12 Practice For each sentence, identify the verb, the adverb, and what the adverb tells. 1. She searched diligently for her purse. 2. The winding river snaked below. 3. The people worked skillfully with the pottery and wool.

13 Practice 4. The city’s emptiness affected them greatly. 5. Place your finished test here. 6. I saw her shopping yesterday. 7. They constructed their homes solidly. 8. I feel strongly that you are telling the truth.
