2 Adjective Phrases A prepositional phrase that functions as an adjective Example: Chinese wallpaper sparked a new decorating era. Wallpaper from China sparked a new decorating era.

3 An adjective phrase, like an adjective, modifies a noun or a pronoun. Example: Woven fabrics were some of the first wall coverings. Wallpaper was a cheap substitute for woven wall hangings.

4 When on prepositional phrase follows another, the second phrase most often modifies: The object of the first adjective phrase. The same word as the first phrase

5 Example of second modifying object: Birds or flowers decorated much of the paper from China. Many samples of the wall coverings of this period are considered artwork today. Example of second modifying same word: Soon wallpaper from France with black designs appeared. Wallpaper from other areas with more complex designs became popular.

6 Adverb Phrases A prepositional phrase that functions as an adverb is called an adverb phrase. Example: Let’s meet outside. Let’s meet outside the terminal.

7 An adverb phrase, like an adverb, modifies verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Example: Verb: We will travel with a tour. Adjective: This tour is famous for its careful planning. Adverb: Have you ever traveled far from home?

8 Adverb phrases tell how, when, where, why, or to what extent. Examples: The tour will travel by plane. The plane will leave in the morning. Our tour will stop in many cities. We’ll visit museums for cultural reasons. We’ll be traveling for a long time.

9 Adverb phrases can occur anywhere in a sentence. Example: The plane was waiting on the runway. At the gate stood many people. I checked my luggage at the counter and boarded the plane.

10 More than one adverb phrase can modify the same word. Example: After a few minutes, we stepped onto the plane. In time for the plane, we ordered food from the lady.
