Adverbs How we do it, where we did it, when we did it, and to what extent it was done
2
Definition An adverb modifies or describes a verb, adjective or another adverb. He completed the assignment quickly. Quickly tells how or when the assignment was completed. The extremely fat woman is Mr. Kaplar’s mother. Extremely tells HOW fat the mother is. Fat (adjective) tells us which woman. The assignment was done very poorly. Very tells to what degree the assignment was done poorly (how it was done- adverb).

Types of adverbs Time(Tell WHEN, how often, or how long something occurs) Sit down immediately. I will be with you shortly. Momentarily, the fun will begin. This class lasts forever. Place(Tell WHERE something occurs) I put the telescope there. Whenever I am nearby, Mrs. Regan is uncomfortable. Come here.

Types of adverbs continued… Manner(Tells HOW something was done) The students sit silently and listen to their teachers. You should walk quickly to your next class. Degree (Tells to what extent something was done. How much or how little of it was done.) The partly completed assignment received no points. The room was too quiet.

Adverb Facts Many (over half) of adverbs end in –ly. However, there are words that end in ly that are not adverbs and many adverbs that do not end in –ly. HOW the word is used determines its function in the sentence. Like adjectives, adverbs can be positive (describing a verb adjective or adverb), comparative (compares how 2 things were done), or superlative (3 or more). The car drove fast. (positive) That car drove faster than this one. (comparative) This car drove fastest. (superlative)

Identify the adverbs in the following paragraph and label their type. Mr. Hostetler walked quietly to the window. He placed the ladder gently against the side of the house and began lightly climbing. Near the top of the ladder, Mr. Hostetler heard a loud noise. He fell backward and landed uncomfortably in a rose bush. He loudly screamed in agony and woke the neighbors. The neighbors were so angry, they called the police.
