Why Handwriting? Handwriting and spelling difficulties in later grades affect the composition quality and amount that children are willing to write. Both skills are directly taught and reinforced so that students get a foundation for writing. Handwriting is closely linked to sound-symbol knowledge. All skills are taught using kinesthetic and tactile memory. Students systematically learn punctuation, capitalization, and proofreading skills.
