4. AREA Area is the two-dimension space inside a region. Data from NAEP suggest that students have an incomplete understanding. Perimeter is the distance around a region. Although perimeter is a 3 rd grade standard, only 71% of 8 th graders accurately identified the perimeter on the NAEP assessment. Students are taught formulas without understanding.
