Theoretical Probability Probability Spectrum: Sample Space- a list of all possible outcomes 1.) What is the sample space for rolling a die? 2.) What is the sample space for flipping a coin?
2
There are 8 grape tootsie pops, 3 cherry tootsie pops, and 1 raspberry tootsie pop in a bag. Use the spectrum to describe each probability when you select one tootsie pop from the bag at random. 1.) What is the likelihood of selecting a grape tootsie pop? 2.) What is the likelihood of selecting a raspberry tootsie pop? 3.) What is the likelihood of selecting a tootsie pop? 4.) What is the likelihood of selecting a chocolate tootsie pop?

Part Whole # of favorable choices # of total choices P(event): Write answer in lowest terms How do we find probability? A.) What is probability? Probability: the likelihood of an event occurring. It can be expressed as a fraction, decimal or percent.
4
Find each probability: Rolling a six-sided die (standard die) 1.) P(two) - 2.) P(even) - 3.) P(not a 5 or 6) -
5
4.) What is the probability of selecting an "O" when selecting a letter from the letters "SNOW PATROL" Use the bag of marbles below to answer questions 5-7. 5.) P(red) 6.) P(blue) 7.) P(green)
7
B. Odds Odds ( ): similar to probability but the ratio is set up in a different way. Odds of an event: (also called odds in favor) # of favorable choices # of unfavorable choices
8
Suppose you choose a letter at random from the words “MRS. PATEK IS COOL” 1.) What are the odds of selecting a K? 2.) What are the odds of selecting a vowel? 3.) What the odds of not selecting a C? 4.) What is the probability of selecting a S?
9
There are 5 blue marbles and 3 red marbles in a bag. What is the probability and odds of selecting a blue marble from the bag? Probability ( ): Odds in favor ( ):
10
1.) The probability of an event is, what are the odds of the event occurring? 2.) If the odds of an event occurring is 2:9, what is the probability? 3.) If you roll a die 200 times, about how many times would you expect to roll a 5?
11
Demonstrate Understanding: There are 4 red, 6 blue, and 2 green marbles in a bag. Find each probability. 1.) P(red) 2.) P(pink) 3.) P (red, green or blue) 4.) P(not green)
