Unit Plan for Year 4,5,6 Social Studies/Health “Perseverance” Created by: Catherine Rivers-smith Social Studies/ HPE Achievement Objectives (SS) - Understand how people make choices to meet their goals (needs and wants) 2C1 (HPE) – Identify and demonstrate ways of maintaining and enhancing relationships between individuals and within groups (Arts) – Share ideas, feelings and stories communicated by their own and other’s objects and images NZ Curriculum Values Through their learning experiences students will develop an awareness of what it is to persevere. They will be presented with ideas that will enable them to think about situations they have been in or will possibly face in the future where perseverance is required. Student Needs: Some students in the class are moving on to College next year (Year 7), others in the class will become Year 5 and 6. Perseverance will benefit the students as it will equip them for higher levels of learning and well as greater responsibilities. Key Area(s) of Learning Social Studies Health Art Unit Aim: Students are learning to develop an awareness of the character traits of perseverance. Underlying Concepts Key competencies Language, symbols and texts: Students will communicate their ideas, experiences and information about perseverance, using language, symbols and texts. Thinking & Relating to others: Students will participate in activities that enable them to share ideas, brainstorm, problem solve and provide them with opportunities to persevere with one another. Participating & Contributing: Students will contribute appropriately as an individual and group member and will make connections with others on the topic of perseverance Managing Self: Students will display that they are capable learners, through self-motivation and having a “can do” attitude. Considerations for this group/class Be clear and concise with guidelines and what is expected from students learning. As students are independent learners I will try to let the learning evolve from the students themselves and listen intently to their discussions and responses to know how to scaffold the students learning. Preparation for the unit Gather resources and ideas (borrowed, internet search, library, things from home)

Overview of Unit Unit Learning Intentions We are learning … To Recognise situations and or scenarios when perseverance is shown and why we need to persevere To understand how choices are made that enable our goals (needs and wants) to be met 2B1 – to explore attitudes, values and actions that contribute to healthy physical and social environments Persevere with an art activity as well as persevere with working alongside others. Art terminology – texture layering Share the ideas, feelings, stories communicated by their own and others objects and images. Success Criteria (which shape our lesson intentions) We will know we have learnt this when we can… Discuss and record our ideas on what it is to persevere Identify the choices we make in order to meet our goals (needs and wants) Recognize that our actions and attitudes can affect others Group work – persevering with each other displaying tolerance/patience each taking responsibility Produce a large story book, displaying our art and learning Provide each other with constructive feedback/feedforward Teaching Learning Activities (What activities to use to enhance learning) In order to be able to achieve criteria students will: -Listen to stories on perseverance e.g. The Little Red Hen -Write their own stories about their experiences of having to persevere -Brainstorm in groups and record their strategies (things that they might do to help them persevere in different situations -Art activity (using different coloured paper, applying texture and layering effects to produce a large story book -Discussions and sharing of ideas, thoughts and feedback TESP 122/762.
