Welcome Dana Families! Dena Hause Dana Middle School Back to School Night September 25, 2014

6 th Grade Curriculum District adopted Common Core Curriculum

Grade 6 Overview Ratios and Proportional Relationships O Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. The Number System O Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. O Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples. O Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers. Expressions and Equations O Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. O Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. O Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. Geometry O Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. Statistics and Probability O Develop understanding of statistical variability. O Summarize and describe distributions.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Two Types of Standards Eight Mathematical Practices Mathematical Content Standards

Common Core Mathematics Practice Standards 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Smarter Balanced Assessment Claim #1 – Concepts & Procedures “Students can explain and apply mathematical concepts and interpret and carry out mathematical procedures with precision and fluency.” Claim #2 – Problem Solving “Students can solve a range of complex well-posed problems in pure and applied mathematics, making productive use of knowledge and problem solving strategies.” Claim #3 – Communicating Reasoning “Students can clearly and precisely construct viable arguments to support their own reasoning and to critique the reasoning of others.” Claim #4 – Modeling and Data Analysis “Students can analyze complex, real-world scenarios and can construct and use mathematical models to interpret and solve problems.”

CST vs. Smarter Balanced Standard 5NS2.4 Understand the concept of multiplication and division of fractions. Standard 5.NF.7 Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.1

Assessments O Formative O Summative O Quarterly District Interim Assessments O Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium

Performance Tasks Challenge student to apply their knowledge and skills to respond to complex real-world problems Collections of questions and activities connected to a single theme or scenario Taken on a computer; 1-2 class periods

Questions about the Common Core Mathematics? Please contact Stephanie Brown Vice Principal Stephanie.brown@sandi.net (619)225-3897 ext. 1107

Grading Categories O Classwork/Homework /Project -- 60% O Tests/Quizzes - 40%

Homework O Expectations: O Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. It will be posted on the My Big Campus calendar. My Big Campus calendar. O Policies O Homework is worth 6 points O Must be complete and turned in on time O Homework is due the day a student returns from an absence, and students are expected to complete homework assigned when absent O Please encourage your child to turn in homework on time to teach him/her the responsibility of meeting deadlines.

LOGO O We will use computers in class on a regular basis, and students will be using the LOGO computers to work on individual and group projects O Google account

*To participate, you must register! Go to DanaAssociation.org for details and registration form. Registration forms also available in the office. Free! Sponsored by Dana Association Help provided by Mrs. Ito or Mrs. Naujokaitis ….and a host of volunteers!
