Project #2 Molding 39-245 Alex Malkin Andrew Choate Anqi Huang
2
Molding Overview ● Molding can be done safely and cheaply without prior experience ● Silicone molds create a plastic part. ● A mold is created using a master part. ● Many copies of the master can be created using the mold.
3
Creating the Mold ● Obtain a master part. ● Find a container that will fit the part with additional space on all sides. ● Raise the master (if necessary). ● Mix the silicone rubber compound. ● Add the mixed silicone rubber, making sure the part is aligned correctly and there are no air bubbles. ● Let the mold harden for 24 hours.
4
Creating the Part ● Remove the part. If using a two piece mold, cut mold. ● Mix the liquid plastic compound. ● Fill the mold with the compound. ● Let the part set for 15 minutes. ● Repeat.
5
Advantages of Molding ● Makes multiple copies. ● Cost effective. ● Easy and requires no experience. ● Creates fairly detailed parts. ● Fast.
6
Disadvantages of Molds ● Need to obtain a master. ● Cannot mold large parts. ● Cannot mold hollow or parts. Thin parts are difficult. ● Molds can break. ● Not precise.
