Background ● Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1st-3rd in 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania ● General Robert E. Lee led his army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania ● collided with the Union army at the Potomac, marched by General George G. Meade

Battle of Gettysburg ● Lee’s march and confidence came from the victory against the Army of Potomac in 1863 ● Lee aimed for the strengthening of northern “copperheads” who favored peace ● Hoped to gain recognition of the Confederacy by Britain and France

Battle of Gettysburg ● President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, delivered his most famous speech at the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg ● Lincoln had denounced former commander Joseph Hooker, and named General Meade. He subsequently 75,000 into southern Pennsylvania

Aftermath of Gettysburg ● Lee waited for a counterattack by the Union but it never came ● General Meade criticized for not pursuing further, causing a drastic defeat for the Confederacy (lost 28,000 men) ● Lee offered his resignation to President Jefferson Davis, but was turned down ● Turned the Civil War into the Union’s favor
