Reading

He was driving home one evening, on a country road. Ever since the Levi’s factory closed, work in this small community had been almost as slow as his battered old car. slow = not active = dull 不景氣的 ‧ Business is slow in winter at the beach resort.

But he never quit trying. Now as winter raged on, the chill had finally hit home. It made the road ahead even bleaker. quit + V-ing/N 停止做 … ‧ The doctor advised my father to quit smoking. ‧ He quit his job because of illness. rage on = keep on raging ( 風雨 / 波浪 ) 持續肆 虐 ‧ The storm has raged over the island for 24 hours

But he never quit trying. Now as winter raged on, the chill had finally hit home. It made the road ahead even bleaker. hit home 使深切感受到 ‧ The message about poverty will hit home when people see the pictures of hungry African children.

But he never quit trying. Now as winter raged on, the chill had finally hit home. It made the road ahead even bleaker. It made the road ahead even bleaker. ( 此為 make + O + OC (Adj) 的句型。 (even 為副詞,用來修飾比較級,表「更加, 愈加」之意,例: ‧ It’s very cold today, but it will be even colder tomorrow.

It was starting to get dark, the continuous drizzle of snow flurries making it difficult to see.

He almost missed the old lady, stranded on the side of the road. But even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. strand 表示「使進退不得,使陷於窘境」 例: ‧ He was stranded in Hong Kong for the loss of his passport. day n. [U][C] 白晝 ‧ They are seldom at home during the day. ( 白天 ) ‧ The days grow shorter as winter approaches.

So he pulled up in front of her car and got out. The lady smiled nervously, looking visibly worried. No one had stopped in the past hours. Was he going to hurt her? He looked poor and hungry. pull up 讓 ( 車 ) 停住 ‧ The policeman asked him to pull up to the curb. 原句= The lady smiled nervously and looked visibly worried.

Realizing that she was frightened, he said quickly, “I’m here to help you. Why don’t you wait inside the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Joe.” As soon as he realized that she was frightened, he said quickly.... Why don’t you + V...? = Why not + V...? ?」 如何?」,例: ‧ Why don't you borrow the book from the teacher? ‧ Why not go on a picnic with us?

By the way, my name is Joe.” by the way 表「順帶一提」,為常見轉 換話題時的用語,例: ‧ By the way, have you ever met his sister?

All she had was a flat tire, but for those who were of the lady’s age, that was bad enough. all 為代名詞,表「所有的事物,全部」,與關係 子句 (she had) 連用,後接單數動詞 (was) , 例: ‧ All she needs is nothing but love. a flat tire 是指「爆胎」,亦可說為 a burst/flat /punctured tire 。 (of) one’s (own) age 在某人這個年紀 ‧ When I was (of) your age, I had two part- time jobs.

While he was working to change the tire, she began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only passing through. She thanked him for coming to her aid. Joe just smiled in response. pass through 經過,通過 ‧ The road passes through the fields. ‧ Some trains pass through the station. come to one’s aid=give sb a hand=help sb ‧ The rescue team came to our aid when we were lost in the mountains.

She asked him how much she owed him and said any amount would be all right. She shuddered to imagine all those awful things that could have happened if Joe had not helped. (But in fact, all those terrible things did not happen because Joe helped.) that

But Joe never thought twice about the money. think twice=think again 仔細考慮,深思熟慮 ‧ You should think twice before you spend NT$15,000 on the toy.

It wasn’t a job but helping someone in need, and there were plenty of people who had lent him a helping hand in the past. it 是指 helping the lady change the flat tire 這件事。 not...but... 例: ‧ He is not my brother but my friend.

It wasn’t a job but helping someone in need, and there were plenty of people who had lent him a helping hand in the past. in need 有困難的,在窮困中的 ‧ Every member of the organization is collecting money for the people in need. lend/give sb a (helping) hand = lend/give a (helping) hand to sb ‧ He lent/gave me a (helping) hand to carry the heavy box. ‧ She always lends/gives a (helping) hand to anyone in difficulty.

He told her that if she really wanted to repay him, she could help the next person whom she found in need. Back...help the next person whom she found in need. 此為 find + O + OC 的用法,在此句中受詞是 the next person ,受詞補語是 in need ,例: ‧ The drunk man woke up to find himself on the street.
