History Margo Lion wanted to make a musical of Hairspray after seeing the TV show. She asked John Waters the gained rights from the New Line Cinema. Afterwards, they contacted Rob Marshall to direct the musical. They had so much success within the production and wanted to make a movie. They toured the country and the movie was created, and became a hit.

Synopsis In Hairspray the setting is around 1962 and everyone is looking for a change because the fifties are out. A main character is a girl from Baltimore named Tracy Turnbald who is big and has the hair and heart to match. Her number one passion is to dance. She happens to win a spot on a local TV dance program and is turned from her normal self to like a teen idol. The problem of this is that can she win the heart of Link Larkin and be on the show.
