1 The Harlem Renaissance (1919-1929 Timeline) By: Amber Johnson US History 1-6-14

2 1917 Marcus Garvey arrived in Harlem and founded the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). In the Silent Protest Parade, Between 10,000-15,000 African-Americans joined.

3 1919 Race riots broke out in Chicago and many other American cities. This was known as the “Red Summer of Hate”. NAACP spoke and had meetings about lynching. An army made almost entirely of African-American soldiers, returned from World War I to Harlem.

4 1921 The Black Swan Phonograph Corporation was started by Harry Pace. They made “race records” which helped bring jazz to a bigger and more diverse crowd. Langston Hughes’ poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” was written and published.

5 1923 Countless poems and songs were written and composed. Many African-Americans began to feel more comfortable expressing their emotions and feelings publically. Some of these famous African- American Artists were Marian Anderson, Claude McKay, James Weldon Johnson, and many more.

6 1926 The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem opened. Harmon Foundation first annual art show of African-American artists’. Langston Hughes’ The Weary Blues is published. l art exhibit

7 1929 Wallace Thurman’s play Harlem, opened on Broadway. The Negro Experimental Theater was created. The Negro Art theatre was founded.
