Ignition Sources There are 3 different ways a burner can be ignited:
1) Standing Pilot Ignition 2) Intermittent Pilot Ignition Intermittent Pilot - S8610U 3) Direct Burner Ignition Hot Surface Ignition – S8910U Direct Spark Ignition – S87

Universal Intermittent Pilot Module
What is the S8610U3009? Provides electronic control of intermittent pilot ignition systems used on gas fired furnaces, boilers, and other heating appliances It’s the brain of the ignition system Receives call for heat signal from the thermostat Starts the spark ignition Opens the pilot valve Senses to see if the pilot is lit Opens the main burner Shuts things down at the end of the call for heat Monitors damper as opened or closed, if damper is attached One Part Number: S8610U3009
6
Normal Operation of an Intermittent Ignition Module
Call for Heat On Off Valve On Pilot Lights Prove Pilot Burner Lights Valve On End Call for Heat Main Burner Pilot Ignition On a call for heat, both the Pilot valve and the Ignition come on together. Once the pilot is proved, the Ignition shuts off and the Main burner opens and remains open throughout the call for heat. When the call for heat ends, both the Main burner and Pilot shut off together.

S8610U Features Universal Compatibility Application Flexibility
Replaces more than 400 Honeywell and competitive models Application Flexibility Works in single-rod and dual-rod applications Works with both natural and LP gas Quality Honeywell Control Provides electronic control for nearly any intermittent pilot ignition systems used on gas-fired furnaces, boilers and more Suitable for use with vent dampers Provides the ignition sequence, flame monitoring and 100% safety shutoff Enhanced Features Single LED indicates flame strength and gives diagnostic information Direct flame signal readout form the board Simplified error codes on label
8
The Benefits Benefit Feature Allows for more options in the field:
0 or 30 second prepurge and 15 or 90 second trial for ignition Assures selected sequence is retained permanently Green LED indicates status, error codes and pilot flame strength If senses use with a vent damper it locks the control, so damper must be used Provides 100% shutoff for both Natural and LP applications Feature Field selectable operating sequence can be customized Control locks to selected sequence on 20th “call for heat” LED communicates system status Integral damper connector Continuous retry ignition sequence
9
Additional benefits Feature Benefit
Single-rod or dual-rod flame sensor Terminal-to-terminal wiring instructions Flame sense terminal 3/16” male QC (virtually all 2-rod systems sold have the sense terminal as 3/16” QC) Spark cable adapter 2.0 A main valve load rating Benefit Works in more applications Reduces wiring errors Prevents possible mis-wire of spark sense and potential for abnormal appliance light-off Includes adapter for rajah and nail type cable on existing systems; Simplified use Broader application; Fits more jobs

Installation of the S8610U Mount new ignition module Wire the module
Do not mount with terminals facing up protect the module from exposure to water, moisture, corrosive chemicals and excessive dust and grease. Wire the module Wire the module per the installation instructions Verify the thermostat anticipator setting
14
Wiring continued For systems with a vent damper connect the damper to P1 Once the vent damper connection is made, the control must be used with a vent damper.
