Monday, Dec. 9 th : “A” Day Tuesday, Dec. 10 th : “B” Day Agenda  Homework questions/Collect  Sec. 4.3 quiz: “Trends in the Periodic Table”  Check Flame Test lab write-ups  Flame Test lab discussion  Conduct Lab, complete analysis and conclusion questions  Lab will be due next time!  Movie: “Hunting the Elements” Elements”

Homework   Sec. 4.3 review, pg. 141: #1-11   Questions?   Problems?

4.3 Quiz: “Trends in the Periodic Table”   You may use your notes, your book, and a periodic table to complete the quiz on your own…   Don’t do #9 or #10 Use the force!

Flame Test Lab Discussion   The different color flames you will see in the “Flame Test” lab are caused by different metals in the solutions.   Remember, most of the elements on the periodic table are metals.   Metals are listed 1 st when naming compounds.   Non-metals are found on the right-hand side of the table.

Flame Test Lab Discussion   Identify the metals in the solutions you will be testing in today’s lab: 1. 1.CuSO 4 2. 2.K 2 SO 4 3. 3.Li 2 SO 4 4. 4.Na 2 SO 4 5. 5.NaCl 6. 6.SrCl 2

Flame Test Lab Hints  To test the NaCl crystals, remove a wooden splint from the beaker of distilled water and dip it into the NaCl crystals so the crystals will stick to the splint.  The cobalt glass is used to help “filter out” the bright yellow flame caused by sodium (Na) metal. When the bright yellow flame is filtered out, it may be easier to see other, less bright colors in the flame.   Hint: Neither of the 2 unknown samples is a mixture…

Lab: “Flame Tests” Safety Items   We will be using bunsen burners so hair must be TIED BACK!   The lights in the lab will be turned OFF so that you can see the flame colors more easily – be careful and be descriptive!   Don’t burn the wooden splint – you only want to see the color made by the metal solution as excited electrons fall back to lower energy states.   Put the splint into the “used splint beaker” when you’re done with the test.

Lab: “Flame Tests”   Be a real scientist! If you’re not sure about the unknowns, go back and test them side-by-side with the sample that you think it might be!   In the Analysis section, question #1: Organizing Data, just write “see data table” for your answer.   Remember that all lab questions need to be answered in COMPLETE SENTENCES!   Be safe and have   Completed lab will be due next time!

Movie: “Hunting the Elements”   You do not have to take notes on the movie, but I do expect you to stay awake and pay attention…
