The Rock Hospital (today a museum) created in the stomach of Castle Hill was run by the capital from 1939 to 1944. The building has several levels, with different heights, approximately 15-30 meters deep under the ground. The total lengths is approximately 2 km, the different parts are connected via tunnels.

At the break out of World War II it was reinforced with ferro-concrete and a hospital was created with a capacity of 200 patients and with operating room. They built a generator, a ventilating system, a cistern and a kitchen. The technology of the period proved to be perfect, because it survived the offensives of World War II unhurt.

During the assault many hand and leg amputations were carried out here. In February 1945 the hospital was very crowded, approx. 600-650 patients, since it was the only hospital with bomb-shelter. Since the stored water was not enough for so many people, they drilled a well, too. During the invasion of Budapest the Soviet troops rushed the hospital, and killed the patients and doctors with grenades, flame- projectors and small arms.
