2 Land of Plenty Agricultural Techniques –Farmers began using technology to grow farmlands around 2400 B.C. –Built irrigations canals to get water to dry areas. –Used a Shaduf to spread water across the lands. (Shaduf is a lever that takes water out of the river.) –New innovations led to a growth in farmland. The bucket is dipped into the river, and the weight on the other end of the "see-saw" makes it easy to lift the water

3 Land of Plenty Egyptian Crops –First to grind wheat into flour to make bread. –Grew vegetables Lettuce, radishes, asparagus, cucumbers. –Grew Fruits Dates, figs, grapes, watermelons. –Grew materials to make clothes Linen- fabric woven from fibers of the flax plant. Dates

5 Land of Plenty Egyptian Houses –Built homes from bricks of mud from the Nile, mixed with chopped straw. –Painted walls white to reflect heat. Paint made from organic materials (white made from crushed bone and ivory, black made from soot produced by oil lamps.) –Wove sticks and palm trees for roofs. –Reed mats covered the floor. –Wealthy citizens had bed frames, cushions –Most people slept outside. Cooled off on roof after sunset.
