3. 1. Ragpickers gathered cotton and linen rags. 2. The cotton and linen rags were beaten with a hammer into pulp. 3. The rags were stored and washed in a chest. 4. It was dumped into water and stirred. 5. Then a wooden frame covered with wire that looked like a screen was dipped into the mixture. 6. It was carefully lifted out holding a layer of the rag mix. 7. After drying and polishing, this would become paper.
