3 Egyptian Dress – B.C.  Linen was used exclusively as a textile with the Egyptians because it was all they were able to grow in their area.  Dyes were from natural products and could be used to color fabrics. Often they were used as the surface decorative threads of embroidery, or in weaving patterns.

4  Typical Ancient Egyptian Dye Colors Blue- a dark indigo. ○ indigo fades so it was sometimes paler blue. Red - similar to Indian red. Yellow - similar to yellow ochre. 11  Typical Roman Women Dress Intusium, a sleeveless under-tunic. Strophium, a bust bodice (much like a sari bodice). Stola, worn by married women, a full length tunic that covered the feet and had a lower border called an instita.  Fashion changes were by color of Stola or by decorative edge.  Brooches were also worn. 15 Byzantine - Women  Modesty was important for all except the very rich, and most women appear almost entirely covered by rather shapeless clothes  Basic Garment Down to the ankles High rounded collar Tight sleeve to wrist Fringes and cuffs may be embroidered Belts are worn  Hair is covered with head-piece or veil.
